I normally don’t post my articles on here but I realize we’ve been having some online issues with stories. Here’s my football notebook that ran in today’s paper.
La Serna Looking Good
The La Serna High School football team is in a dead period and won’t be active again until mid-August.
Up until now, the break has served as the only momentum-stopper for a squad that finished runner-up in the Marina Passing Tournament and first in the lineman competition two weeks back.
The Lancers participated in their final activity prior to the mandatory stoppage Thursday, an impromptu three-way passing scrimmage at La Habra that included Ontario High.
Each squad’s first-team offense posted varying degrees of success, and the Lancers probably did best.
La Serna quarterback Andrew Buenrostro led two scoring drives against La Habra and one versus Ontario. Receiver Tommy Ruiz shined versus Ontario, hauling in three receptions, the last an acrobatic sideline catch.
“It’s good to see Andrew taking control of the offense and making adjustments,” La Serna head coach Margarito Beltran said. “He’s been progressing.”
Buenrostro’s lone score of against Ontario was on a toss to Fabian Salazar from about four feet. Buenrostro later hit Salazar on a wide-open 40- yard delay route against La Habra that brought a hearty laugh from Lancers running backs coach John Caballero.
“That wouldn’t happen during a real game,” Cabellero said. “That’s one of those passing league plays.”
The Lancers defense also made plays, including when defensive back Connor Burke intercepted a tipped pass.
“This is what we were missing last year,” defensive assistant Taylor Boyd said of Burke, who was injured for most of 2009. “He’s going to be a big boost.”

La Habra’s Grade A(very) student
La Habra running back Ahmad Avery missed Thursday’s scrimmage to attend a camp at Cornell University.
“He’s being recruited by Cornell and wanted to show his stuff off,” head coach Frank Mazzotta said. “He’s an elite academic student with a 4.0 GPA.”
Avery will likely split time in the backfield with senior back Drake Griffin this season.
La Habra’s Parsons logs off
Mazzotta confirmed that defensive end Will Parsons left the team to compete in track and field full time.
The Daily News boys Track Athlete of the Year was the state’s top junior discus thrower last season after finishing sixth at the CIF State Finals.
“That’s just what goes with being a strong team,” Mazzotta said. “There are kids who leave the program all the time.”

Santa Fe’s Pinedo out indefinitely
Santa Fe football coach Jack Mahlstede confirmed that senior running back Jon Pinedo tore a knee ligament and is out indefinitely.
“It’s a tough loss,” Mahlstede said. “Someone else is going to have to fill in.”
Possible replacements include Alex Mirola, Julien Solis, Darian King and newcomers Aaron Zaragoza and Isaiah Wilson.
ALSO: Today’s scheduled passing scrimmage and lineman competition between St. Paul and El Rancho was canceled for unspecified reasons.
