A Late Game Balls Edition (Week 4)

For some reason, a few of my posts were deleted this week, so I’m trying to catch up. Let’s start with game balls for the previous week.

The first game ball goes to the uncanny Jonathan Mesa, who’s starting to make monster games look easy.

The Cantwell running back rushed for 322 yards on 32 carries with five touchdowns in the Cardinals easy 49-28 route of St. Bernard last Friday.

The win pushed Cantwell Sacred Heart to 4-0 overall and 1-0 in league.

The next game ball goes to Whittier Christian junior Grant Escobar, who had to fill in at running back for the injured Joel Rhone.

Escobar had an all-around solid effort in the Heralds’ 21-14 nonleague win over Salesian last Friday. Escobar gained 257 total yards from scrimmage. He rushed for 183 yards on 28 carries and hauled in five receptions for 74 yards.

The third game ball goes to La Mirada quarterback Shane Blood, who may have put together his best effort of the season last Friday in La Mirada’s 58-7 rout of Artesia to open Suburban League play.

Blood connected on 10 of 14 first-half passes for 223 yards, biting off huge chunks of Artesia real estate.

The first four of those aerials went for touchdowns, 28 yards to Anthony Diaz, 34 yards to Max Gama, 32 yards to Sean Trani and 30 yards to Aaryn Bouzos.

The next game ball goes to Pioneer’s Isaac Corona, who turned in a memorable effort in the Titans’ 17-16 win over Cerritos last Friday.

Corona, who was an emergency quarterback last year, tallied 20 tackles at the linebacker position and helped repeal a late charge by Cerritos.

The next game ball goes to St. Paul defensive back Gabriel Gonzalez, who turned in another fine effort versus Ayala last Friday in nonleague play.

Gonzalez intercepted two passes in helping the Swordsmen to a 28-6 nonleague win. According to the newspaper’s stats, that’s the third interception of the year for Gonzalez. St. Paul has chosen not to report stats to the paper of maxpreps.com.

The next game ball goes to La Serna senior Andrew Rosales, this week’s Daily News Player of the Week.

The three-year varsity player turned in a well-rounded effort, hauling in seven receptions for 146 yards and one touchdown in La Serna’s 44-7 nonleague victory over lower-division foe Warren last Friday. Rosales also registered two tackles and his first interception of the year.
