Video Takes: Schurr at St. Paul (Week 5)

It’s on to the first Week 5 video prediction/breakdown with SGVfootballer Aram Tolegian. Here we talk about a pretty solid area nonleague football game between surging Schurr and solid St. Paul at Monsignor Cranham Stadium Friday at 7:30 p.m.

The Spartans followed up a bad loss to Cantwell Sacred Heart (49-28) with a better effort in a loss to Downey (29-26). Schurr then responded with a gritty come-from-behind win over El Toro (29-28) and then survived a tough battle with California (28-23) last week. Spartans senior quarterback Aaron Cantu turned in a vintage effort versus California last Thursday.

Cantu completed 20 of 29 passes for four touchdowns and 315 yards. Not be to forgotten in that game were the efforts of receivers Abraham Gonzalez (four receptions for 123 yards) and Chris Chiaromonte (7 receptions for 88 yards).

As for St. Paul, the Swordsmen secondary has shined brightest, intercepting four passes versus Ayala last week and seven for the season. The Swordsmen have returned three of the those interceptions for touchdowns, including when AJ Gonzalez returned a pick for a touchdown last week against Ayala. It will be interesting to see if Schurr’s passing game can defeat St. Paul’s pass defense.
