Thursday’s Week 5 Injury Report (Just on Friday)

The posting problems continue. This was supposed to come out yesterday and did not. But here’s the info for Friday (sorry Pioneer).

California High School

Coach Jim Arnold confirmed junior running back Justin Dankert, who is recovering from neck issues, will receive more carries this week after determining that senior fullback Anthony Ratliff is out for the game with a back injury suffered last weekend.

Arnold is hoping Ratliff will return next week.

The Condors have more bad news, however, as junior defensive end/punter Kylie Tuckett broke his leg during the fourth quarter of last week’s loss to Schurr. Tuckett is likely done for the season.

Cantwell Sacred Heart

Cantwell Sacred Heart coach Kim Taylor is not reporting any injuries.

El Rancho

El Rancho coach Rick Zepeda announced that only junior Josh Lopez is out today after breaking his collarbone against Montebello two weeks ago. Zepeda is hoping to get Lopez back for the playoffs and perhaps even the season finale.

La Habra

The Highlanders have a bye but La Habra coach Frank Mazzotta confirmed that offensive lineman Kevin Casey is expected to be activated next week and may be available for the Freeway League opener against Fullerton. Casey has been out the entire year with a broke tibia suffered in August.

La Mirada

Coach Mike Moschetti did not report any injuries and isn’t expecting anyone to miss on Friday.

La Serna

The Lancers have a bye.

Montebello

Oilers coach Pete Gonzalez confirmed that quarterback Fernando Hoffens (bruised right forearm) and running back Marcus Owens (calf, ankle) are near 100 percent after the Oilers had a bye last week and will play today at California. Both have played through their injuries the last few weeks.

Pioneer

Sophmore tight end Anthony Acevedo did not play on Thursday against Rancho Alamitos with bruised ribs and coach Ramon Juarez is hoping he’ll be back by next week.

St. Paul

Coach Marijon Ancich said center Greg Gilmore, who has been recovering from a hematoma on his left side and hasn’t played a snap, is cleared to play and may even start tonight. Gilmore’s playing time will be determined by his level of conditioning.

Linebacker Nick Downs, a transfer from Whittier, has an undisclosed knee injury that Ancich said has something to do with “muscle tissue” around his knee. Downs missed the last two weeks and is out today.

Linebacker James Fimbres hyperextended his knee in the opening kickoff against L.A. Garfield and is out for a second straight week.

Santa Fe

Coach Jack Mahlstede confirmed defensive back/wide receiver/quarterback Christian Mahlstede is out versus Downey. The junior has a broken bone in his right hand and played in the Chiefs’ first two games versus Warren and Bonita but has sat out since then. Jack Mahlstede said Christian Mahlstede will sit this week to properly heal in time for the Del Rio League season.

Wide receiver Joey Davis played sparingly in Santa Fe’s season-opener versus Warren four weeks ago because of an injury to his right wrist. Davis is out tonight and said he was hopeful of being cleared next week.

Schurr

Schurr coach Ben Negrete confirmed fullback/linebacker Eric Magos is out for another week with a strained knee but is inching closer to returning and may do so against Bell Gardens next week.

Right tackle Jose Trejo was released from the hospital earlier in the week after battling with a serious staph infection. He is healthy but is out for the season.

Whittier

Whittier is choosing not to report any injuries.

Whittier Christian

Despite some good news earlier in the week, running back Joel Rhone is out of tonight’s game at Cantwell confirmed coach Sergio Gradilla.

Both Rhone and Gradilla were hopeful the junior running back would be back this week. Rhone is expected back next week when the Heralds return to Olympic League play.

Cornerback Grady Smith is recovering from a back injury and may also be cleared as early as next week.

Gradilla said that linebacker Daniel Abernethy is recovering nicely after breaking his middle finger in the fourth quarter of the St. Margaret’s game. He is expected back in two weeks.
