La Habra vs. Tustin at Angel Stadium (Second Half)

Here are the updates on the second half. Thanks for following along.

The Highlanders are the 2010 CIF-Southern Section Southwest Division Champions.

Tustin: The Tillers took over on their 20 and drove to the La Habra 47 before back Tyler Siudzinski was dropped for a loss of six on second down. On a third and 12, the Tillers picked up two yards put were forced to punt for the first time in the game. Tustin 20, La Habra 14 with 9:12 remaining in the game.

La Habra: The Highlanders have taken the lead for the first time in the second half thanks to the exploits of senior running back Drake Griffin. After the Highlanders took over on their 7 after a strong punt, Griffin ran for 11 yards and then busted a 65-yard run down the sidelines before he was pushed out of bounds at the Tillers’ 17. Two plays later, Griffin scored from 11 yards out to the tie the score at 20. After Sean Wale’s extra point, La Habra took the lead at 21-20 with 7:44 remaining in the third.

Tustin: The Tillers have been stopped for the second time in as many possessions this half. Tustin took over at its 20 and again marched on the Highlanders before reaching the reaching the Highlanders 32 with a third and five. Siudzinski was stopped for no gain and then the Highlanders dodged a bullet when Tillers quarterback Cody Oxby threw incomplete (overthrow) on his second pass of the game on a slip screen in which his fullback Denzale Stewart was wide open at the five. Turnover on downs. La Habra 21, Tustin 20 with 2:12 left in the third.

La Habra:
Perhaps seizing the momentum, the Highlanders have scored again thanks again to Griffin. The Highlanders drove 59 yards on six plays capped by a 5-yard touchdown carry from Griffin on the second play of the fourth quarter. Griffin carried on all six plays and helped La Habra get out of an immediate false start to open the drive with a 16-yard carry. La Habra 28, Tustin 20 with 11:47 in the fourth.

Today’s estimated attendance has been announced at 7, 294.

Tustin: The Tillers have struck back on a 26-yard touchdown run from Terence Martinez to pull within two. Again, Tustin failed on another two-point conversion try and again because Oxby overshot a wide open receiver, this time missing Conner Fromknecht in the corner of the end zone. The Tustin touchdown broke La Habra’s streak of 21 unanswered points. Tustin took over at its 25 and was aided by a Highlanders’ pass interference call that moved the ball to the La Habra 26. La Habra 28, Tustin 26 with 9:45 in the fourth.

La Habra: It appears Tustin has no answer for Griffin, who is now, because of a great push from his offensive line, dicing the Tillers on each carry. The Highlanders took over on their 28 and handed off to Griffin six straight times, who moved the ball to the Tustin 10. On a third and three from the 10, the Highlanders were called for a false start, moving the ball back to the 15. Vai Peko then carried for six yards before Griffin scored nearly untouched up the middle on a fourth and three. Wale’s extra point was good, putting La Habra up 35-26 with 6:07 left in the game.

Tustin: The Tillers have shown the grit of a true No. 1 seed, fighting back and moving to the Highlanders’ 20 with a minute left. However, Oxby threw incomplete on a fourth and four from the Highlander 16, turning the ball over with 1:34 left and La Habra leading 35-24 and Tustin without timeouts.

La Habra: The Highlanders didn’t fool around, taking three knees en route to their third straight CIF-Southern Section Southwest Division crown and fourth straight CIF-SS title. Final score is La Habra 35, Tustin 26.

LH fan that was lame. Little did you know that both Haynes and Griffen were 2 of the laziest kids on the team. They both missed games and always looked out of shape. They were great but very raw. Both should be playing for a PAC 10 school. Look at Max Gama, WSU commit. I definitly think Drake is a bigger, stronger, faster running back. If LH coach wasn’t so in love with QB-Clemons and gave Drake the ball over 20 times a game, he would have over 2,000 yards this season and probably getting a big time scholarship.

LH fan. You are just a hater of something you have never been a part of. St.Paul has probably beat you, your daddy, your brother,or your grandpa somewhere down the line. Its obvious you go to st.paul games because you know so much about personel, hater. If you went this year, looks like we were a better team without Griffen this year, even with two new junior running backs, who both got 1st Team All-League in Division 3(same league as Serra), not Division 20 like LH. St. Paul would smash LH next year and every year after that. The LH program is growing up, but we are still your daddy. Need to beat a Div.1 school for some respect. Want to know how many St.Paul has, ask Coach A.

  • Santos Auslander

I enjoyed reading this post a lot, so much that I wished it was longer. Very engaging writing style!

  • lh fan

what do i have to a hate on….i would never hate on a team that lost to Norwalk and didnt play no D-1 teams this year..and SP has played D-1 teams in the PAST but when is the last time St.paul beat a D-1 team…and st paul was obviously not a better team without griffin you guys once again failed to make the play-offs three years in a row now….and sorry to break it to you but your guys league is not good, the only team that is worth talking about is serra other than the rest of the teams are BS.. and if you think the running backs you guys had this are better than griffin you must be smokin…Griffin had better stats then them combined…la habra would of wiped out st.paul this year and the next…..SP got rings? cause we do!

  • Enough Already

Wait a minute, wait a minute, wait a minute! If I’m hearing you right, the competition a division IV (4) team plays on a regular season basis is better than a division VI (6) school? You mean to tell me a school with 650 students and a lot less boys to choose from plays in an inferior division against inferior competition? WHAT ARE YOU SMOKIN’? Griff didn’t do JACK last season with what little the two RBs did this past season. Sure Griff’s stats were phenomenal- he moved DOWN to a lesser division. He couldn’t run the ball in the higher division with less, as the current backs did this past season. Here’s something to chew on- can you imagine what his numbers would have been like if he went to Whittier Christian and played with them in division XI (11)? But that would’ve have happened only if he wasn’t chasing a ring! That’s he and his family’s perogative though. Nobody can take that from them. When Flores and Haynes transferred, they went UP to division III (3) to play, not DOWN to stand out. Are you following me? Either way, it sucks for the boys who’ve put in the hard work for EITHER program and then get relegated to back up duty because some hot-shot comes in chaaing a championship THOSE ARE THE ONES I FEEL FOR. Studies say laughter is good for the heart, so thank you!

  • Enough Already

… I almost forgot- how many division VI (6) teams have been invited to the State Championship games since it’s inception? Here’s a hint- ZERO! What does that say about the respect CIF gives your powerhouse division… Go win your D-VI Championships. Weak.

  • lh fan

griiffin didnt do jack last year? but im pretty sure he led your team in rushing and was second in receiving….he had the most touchdowns and if you forgot, Old Coach A did not give him the ball much and was splitting his carries with Jared Morales and Deion Williams which turned out to be no bodies…and on a garbage team griffin still managed to get 2nd team all league RB behind malcolm marble the D3 MVP and the running back from st francis that put up 200 yds against garbage st paul and he also earned 2nd team All-area..against all the D1 teams you played last year he was the only one to score….and the teams you guys been loosing too lately (norwalk, la mirada) you guys mine as well drop to division 12 or something like that…you guys played ayala, schurr, norwalk,la mirada, and garfield in your preseason and none of those schools are in a higher division than LH…and the fact that you lost to one of these schools is pathetic..Griffin would have standed out where ever he played it did not matter theres no denying his talent. you SP people are certified haters you are right enough already…you people do not make sense.

  • Enough Already

So what you’re saying is LH has never had a down year, has always been the cream of the crop in their league, e.g. division, so on and so forth? I don’t think so. So another school had a down year and bounced back with a softer schedule than what it’s typically known for. It’s been a long time since they’ve had a schedule like last season’s but before then, it’s always been SO Notre Dame, AMAT, Crespi, Alemany, Servite, SJ Bosco, LB Poly, etc. Catch my drift, young gun? LH goes out and schedules 3 Trinity league teams and gets punched in the mouth. I don’t care who was hurt and not playing, a public school has a MUCH LARGER pool of boys (or should) to draw from. There’s no excuse to NOT have viable back-ups at the ready. Although, there is some great talent over there. Some big boys that come play with the big boys up in Trinity. Maybe their parents should reconsider.
That stud of a running back over at SJ Bosco didn’t leave his school chasing a ring, he stood in there and tore up his league. They (SJ Bosco) had a disappointing season, but that RB was something else. He didn’t leave; he gets more respect for not wanting to be a trophy-chaser; and he’s getting a world-class education to boot! No remedial classes over. His offers won’t be “Preferential” offers, they’ll be legitimate SCHOLARSHIP offers (see Farmer from J. Serra, Gardena).
But all’s not lost, Mazzotta showed big cajones scheduling those big boys in Trinity. But now the truth is written in the history books.
Congratulations on your D-VI championship. The boys DID deserve it.

I go to all La Habra games because my children are in the band. I have since become a football junkie that even after football season is over, I visit all the football blogs to get my football fix. It is an honor that talented athletes transfer to La Habra to get a shot at playing in a championship game and get the chance to get a ring. For a small town like La Habra, to have a powerhouse football team is something the townfolks look forward to because they get bragging rights. I have become a La Habra football fan because I am a sucker for dreamers who make their dreams come true. Please don’t fault Griffin for chasing his dream. A few days before the Poinsettia Bowl, I have told everyone I know to watch the game and to keep particular attention to a La Habra boy named Hillman also voted MWC Freshman of the Year. I am so proud and can’t wait for Monday to brag about what he did yesterday. Hillman made a name for himself and once again put La Habra in the map. Griffin, Hillman, and all other talented and driven athletes would not shine unless somebody give the athlete the opportunity to shine. To all you talented athletes, I am so smitten by your drive and determination. You inspire a lot of people and give pride to your community. I watched the SDSU vs Navy yesterday and it was like watching La Habra vs Tustin all over again. SDSU has both running and passing game (much like La Habra) while the Navy depended so much on their running game. I have seen so many games to know that a one-sided strategy will not win championships.

The way you feel about your program right now is great, because thats the same love we have for our program.Winning builds tradition. Its definitly fun to see someone you know contributing to a college team.I will tell you a little about me to see where am coming from.
1996 St.Paul freshman team 17-0. Last game against undefeated Bishop Amat featured Chris Rix(Flordia State QB) and Jason Leach (USC-started safety on the national title team).
1997 We beat Notre Dame who had that running back Justin Fargas.
1998-We play 2 games on Fox sports West. Thats big time.We hold the CIF record for most back to back shutouts 6.But we lost in the finals to Hart (Kyle Boller-QB NFL).I played with a kid named Marcel Almond was our WR/DB.He is on of the all-time multi athlete ever in the area.He was a 4 time state champion in the hurldes.Thats amazing. He went on to USC, started for Pete Carrol in 2001 at DB, and the rest is history.
1998-we move up to Div.1. Lost in the second round to Eisenhower. That year we played Mater Dei at St.Paul and barely lost. They had Matt Lienart and Matt Grootegoed who werent to bad.We killed Lienart and sacked him about 4 times.I have great memories and enjoy watching my little brother who is a junior right now.
My advice, enjoy it while it last! Merry X-mas to all.
