La Habra vs. Tustin at Angel Stadium (Second Half)

FINAL SCORE: LA HABRA 35, TUSTIN 26

The Highlanders are the 2010 CIF-Southern Section Southwest Division Champions.

Tustin: The Tillers took over on their 20 and drove to the La Habra 47 before back Tyler Siudzinski was dropped for a loss of six on second down. On a third and 12, the Tillers picked up two yards put were forced to punt for the first time in the game. Tustin 20, La Habra 14 with 9:12 remaining in the game.

La Habra: The Highlanders have taken the lead for the first time in the second half thanks to the exploits of senior running back Drake Griffin. After the Highlanders took over on their 7 after a strong punt, Griffin ran for 11 yards and then busted a 65-yard run down the sidelines before he was pushed out of bounds at the Tillers’ 17. Two plays later, Griffin scored from 11 yards out to the tie the score at 20. After Sean Wale’s extra point, La Habra took the lead at 21-20 with 7:44 remaining in the third.

Tustin: The Tillers have been stopped for the second time in as many possessions this half. Tustin took over at its 20 and again marched on the Highlanders before reaching the reaching the Highlanders 32 with a third and five. Siudzinski was stopped for no gain and then the Highlanders dodged a bullet when Tillers quarterback Cody Oxby threw incomplete (overthrow) on his second pass of the game on a slip screen in which his fullback Denzale Stewart was wide open at the five. Turnover on downs. La Habra 21, Tustin 20 with 2:12 left in the third.

La Habra:
Perhaps seizing the momentum, the Highlanders have scored again thanks again to Griffin. The Highlanders drove 59 yards on six plays capped by a 5-yard touchdown carry from Griffin on the second play of the fourth quarter. Griffin carried on all six plays and helped La Habra get out of an immediate false start to open the drive with a 16-yard carry. La Habra 28, Tustin 20 with 11:47 in the fourth.

Today’s estimated attendance has been announced at 7, 294.

Tustin: The Tillers have struck back on a 26-yard touchdown run from Terence Martinez to pull within two. Again, Tustin failed on another two-point conversion try and again because Oxby overshot a wide open receiver, this time missing Conner Fromknecht in the corner of the end zone. The Tustin touchdown broke La Habra’s streak of 21 unanswered points. Tustin took over at its 25 and was aided by a Highlanders’ pass interference call that moved the ball to the La Habra 26. La Habra 28, Tustin 26 with 9:45 in the fourth.

La Habra: It appears Tustin has no answer for Griffin, who is now, because of a great push from his offensive line, dicing the Tillers on each carry. The Highlanders took over on their 28 and handed off to Griffin six straight times, who moved the ball to the Tustin 10. On a third and three from the 10, the Highlanders were called for a false start, moving the ball back to the 15. Vai Peko then carried for six yards before Griffin scored nearly untouched up the middle on a fourth and three. Wale’s extra point was good, putting La Habra up 35-26 with 6:07 left in the game.

Tustin: The Tillers have shown the grit of a true No. 1 seed, fighting back and moving to the Highlanders’ 20 with a minute left. However, Oxby threw incomplete on a fourth and four from the Highlander 16, turning the ball over with 1:34 left and La Habra leading 35-24 and Tustin without timeouts.

La Habra: The Highlanders didn’t fool around, taking three knees en route to their third straight CIF-Southern Section Southwest Division crown and fourth straight CIF-SS title. Final score is La Habra 35, Tustin 26.
