Football: Juarez out at Pioneer, but will remain as AD

Ramon Juarez, in his 15th season at Pioneer High School, has been relieved of his coaching dutes, Pioneer principal Monica Oviedo confirmed Monday.
Juarez, who will remain as the school’s athletic director, was 65-88-1, including finishing last in the Del Rio League this season at 1-9.
Oviedo refused to answer any questions directly, but referred to an e-mail statement in which she said:
“It is with mixed feelings that we share with you that after 15 seasons, Ramon Juarez will no longer serve as head football coach at Pioneer High School. Ramon began his coaching career at Pioneer High School as an assistant in 1991, and was later promoted to head coach in 1997. His coaching legacy includes a Del Rio League championship in 1998, 2 CIF quarterfinal appearances in 1998 and 2002 as well as Del Rio League/All Area Coach of the Year honors in 1998 and NFL (high school) Coach of the Week honors in 1998 and 2003. Ramon is a man of tremendous character and integrity, who thrived in building positive relationships with countless young men and women through his role as head football coach. His knowledge of the game and respect from his peers in the coaching ranks is unparalleled. Ramon’s effort, resilience, and commitment to the football players at Pioneer High School are deeply appreciated.”
Calls to Juarez have yet to be returned.

  • Dear Monica

That was some very nice drivel about coach Juarez, showing that all your years of advanced education have served you well. I’m sure that the combination of praising Ramon highly and simultaneously refusing to be interviewed has everyone satisfied, so you can neatly dismiss any notion that the taxpayers (who provide your salary) deserve to know anything more about this matter.

What exactly is it that you expected HER to say? That she didn’t treat Mr. Juarez with an ounce of respect, dignity and or professionalism, nor did she show any integrity. She did however, dispose of Mr. Juarez like the evening garbage! Or was she going to explain how Mr. Juarez has been “Officially RELEASED” from the position as Head Football Coach, yet will remain as AD! Ok let’s think about this for a minute. “RELEASED”, indicates that he wasn’t able to Run, Maintain and or Execute the Football Program, BUT he’s going to continue to RUN an ENTIRE ATHLETIC DEPARTMENT!! ??? REALLY?!?!?!?

dont know what the people at pioneer are thinking. do they really think they are going to get another quality coach to come in and take over. coach juarez always did the best he could with what he had to work with. it is not his fault he always got all the areas left overs. sad to say, but its true. he has won in the past when he has had the talent to work with. he will never come out and say it, but as far as this season goes, his team left him and the coaching staff hanging. they could have performed better than they did. the school left him hanging too. there is not an ounce of loyalty to anyone anymore. i understand the school though, they probably really felt they werent getting their $3,500 worth from coach juarez. damn, for that kind of money, he should be winning c.i.f.every year right?what is that, about $3.50 an hour. good luck.

  • Dear Monica

When a school principal, or anyone for that matter, refuses to answer questions directly, it is a big red flag that they’ve either got something to be ashamed of, or else they are hoping the public will soon forget the matter.

In either case, it smacks of a person who feels they are on an elevated plane from the average person, someone who can play people like a fiddle because they are so far superior in mind and wisdom.

Harry Truman, who served in this nation’s highest elected office, would give you a straight answer without hedging or equivocating. And yet this lady Monica can’t bring herself to state the reasons for her actions. Some leader!

Go back and re-read Monica’s email statement. Notice that if you omit the first sentence, it seems as if nothing adverse has happened; indeed, the bulk of her message seems to indicate that Juarez is the ideal coach for Pioneer!

If Ramon, possessing all the fine attributes Monica describes, is not up to the task, who is? This move only makes sense if she has a BETTER IDEA, and it seems to me that we’re entitled to hear it.

And yet, he is still relieved of his duties? Give him a program with as many kids as Santa Fe , La Serna, Cal , the Ranch, or even Whittier and he would be contending for league and division titles every year. Every one of his peers know this and I bet some of them wouldn’t mind having him as their offensive coordinator. Unfortunately open enrollment, allowing private school kids to choose their school in the district pretty much kills Pioneer’s hope of ever contending with schools whose population are twice as big. Keep Juarez as head coach and allow Pioneer to join another league, like Mission Valley, with the same enrollment numbers and you will see a complete 180, but the powers that be wont let this happen.

Good luck to the next coach that comes in, you will need it (along with countless prayers, Hail Mary’s, wishes, rubbing Buddha’s stomach, crossing every finger and of those who are next to you, pilgrimage, flipping coins, carrying a rabbits foot, a four leaf clover, capturing a leprechaun, pick up any penny you could find, step over cracks, “whatever it takes,” I guess.

Good luck to Coach Juarez, a GREAT coach, and most importantly, an EXCEPTIONAL role model.

We have a “Principal” just like that… She fired a Basketball Head Coach without consulting ANYONE, even the AD… then seeing the error of her ways; re-hired him, he took the job back and smartly got out as soon as he could a year or so later. Last June (yes June… after school was out, esentialy fired the Head Football coach). The official reason was for budgtary reasons.

Good luck with her, you’ll need it.

Mrs. Oviedo made a tough decision that I agree with. You can argue enrollment and recuiting of local talent all you want but the continual decline of the football program at PiHi is quite obvious. Perhaps Rockne himself cannot turn Pioneer around but does that mean you don’t at least try? If Juarez will still be the AD he will have a chance to prove his character and support his replacement. A solid football program can set a positive tone for the entire school year or a negative one. From the few comments I feel many at my old alma mater have gotten so used to losing that they make excuses then accept the losing as inevitable. That is not good for parents or players. Juarez had his chance now it is due time for a change.

    coach slayer:
you must be somebody close to monica becasue pioneer just went 5-5 the precious season. dont be a dumb ass and agree with something you probably dont know nothing about. get the facts.

  • GetReady

I remember hearing Coach Juarez saying the average size of his line was 6′ and 250 lbs (give or take) and then we get the pre-season poll and they are rated…what was it…top 5 in the area? Great running back in Botello and a huge (for the area) line…What Happened???? Then I go see em play, and when the game is out of reach for them they start getting called for “unsportsman like conduct” at least 5 times and none of those players get taken out of the game by their coach. WHAT IS THAT? Regardless of school size and demmographics there is NO excuse for that type of behavior dishonoring the school, the parents and the game we all love. Lack of Heart + Respect + Discipline = COACH!

@keep it real: You are part of the problem at PiHi. Slayer is dead on. You want facts? 8-32 in league play the last 8 years. Not a single winning season in league since what 3-2 in 2002? The non-league schedule is against the weakest teams they can find that make their over-all record deceptive to say the least. And you call their 2010 record of 1-4 in league fine. Vince Lombardi said “If winning is not important then why keep score”? Pioneer faithful have settled for the philosophy of just show up because poor us we don’t get the good players and can’t win with the guys we have and that’s okay. Well it’s not and Juarez has had his nine lives and then some. Why not try someone new? They can’t do any worse. People come on this blog and make excuses for the guy and team and no one will assume accountability. That is not leading it’s enabling. The man may be fun at a party and a great backslapper but as a coach his time has come and Oviedo was more than kind in her words about him. You must be related to the program somehow to be so blinded with whats happened to Pioneer football the past decade under Juarez. Let him show his character by activly supporting the new coach and not just hire another one of his cronies.
