Breaking News: Pioneer makes it official, hires Chuck Willig as football coach

Charles Willig, who has more than 25 years experience coaching high school football, including assistant stints at St. Paul and Salesian, is Pioneer’s new football coach, principal Monica Oviedo announced today.
Willig played for and coached under legendary St. Paul coach Marijon Ancich. He recently coached at St. Anthony in Long Beach and also owns and operates a sports academy with his brother, Greg, who will be his offensive coordinator.
“I am more than pleased with our selection,” Oviedo said in a statement released by the Whittier Union High School District. “(I) have every belief that, with coach Willig’s experience and positive work with kids, we will soon see a major constructive shift in the culture of athletics at Pioneer.”
Willig replaces Ramon Juarez, who was 65-88-1 in 15 seasons with the Titans. He was fired after the Titans went 1-9 this season.
“I have watched Dr. Oviedo and the administration do amazing things to improve Pioneer’s academic standards and the school’s infrastructure,” Willig said in a statement released by the district. “I am looking forward to offering my experience to Pioneer’s student-athletes in order to help build a winning tradition on the field and champions off the field as well.
“I believe that our staff of coaches, the parents, alumni and the Pioneer community will be proud of the character and enthusiasm, which we will bring to our football program. We want everyone involved to think, train, act and play like champions.”

I give him 3 years. Either the team will continue to under perform, or he will do a decent job and get a better gig. I know I didn’t exactly break out the Crystal Ball, but stating the obvious is necessary sometimes.

  • reality

You are a classless idiot for using that screen name.

  • anonymous

wow….st paul is really getting around these days….hope he is coming in with a different game plan than the one they use over in santa fe springs. you need to find a quarterback first. oh wait, pioneer will just follow what st paul and most recently what their basketball team was attempting to do. recruit. good luck, you will need it.

  • TITANic

Willig will operate on a long leash because he hails from St Paul, same as Oviedo. Swordsmen grads, you see, save their morning dumps because it smells better than French perfume.

  • Titan Alumni

3 years? I say 2. And yes, unfortunately the program will continue to perform as it has. Coaching was not the problem, and neither were the kids. It is the situation at PHS. Out of the 35-40 boys that come out each year for football only about a handful had ever played. Then there is the issue with continued declining enrollment at PHS. The Willigs will soon find this out and say the hell with it and move on to better and bigger things. Is it me or does Oviedo’s statement make it seem as if Willig will be replacing all Pioneer sports coaches? She really has no clue. I also give her a couple more years till she moves on. Coach Willig, please keep in mind that both you and Ancich at Whittier will be kept an eye on for any cif violations (recruitment).

  • SPSwordsmen4LYF

do NOT put Willig and Ancich (Whittier) in the same category just because of the SP connection. One has a teaching credential in an academic subject and one doesn’t. One will still be coaching at their new school in three years one won’t.
Is Willig going to charge PHS students for private training in the off season? Is he going to charge students for NCAA Clearinghouse counseling services? Is he going to pay the district rental fees to run his recruiting camps at PHS? Is he going ot get everyone busted when one of his “campers” enrolls at PHS?
How is this hire consistent with the academic goals of the school? La Serna has the luxury of hiring a guy like this. Not Pioneer. PHS student athletes don’t need the “experience” this guy and his brother are “offering”, PHS student-athletes need to pass their academic classes and raise the academic profile of the school. How did St. Anthony do when he was there? St. Paul do when he was there?

  • Titan Alumni

SPSwordsmen4LYF, well said. I’m glad a St. Paul alumni is calling Oviedo out on her hiring choice.

  • Coach Slayer

There were alot of people trying to steer Oviedo away from this hire but she listened to those with a vested interest. Academy type coaches do not last and this one will more than likely will be one and done. I also hope he and his brother have agreed to stop all this pay for play private instruction as it could lead to favoritism. I would like Steve to get the AD’s (Juarez) comments on this hire. From the first look it appears she put someone in there that she can quite easily manipulate. I do not see how this naming makes any sense other than business sense for these brothers. Otherwise why would they want this job???Pioneer alum and parents are typically docile and non-confrontational when it comes to athletics but this hire smells funny and they should ask some questions.

  • TITANic

I don’t trust anybody with a doctorate who can’t perform some kind of medical treatment. Combine Oviedo’s trumped-up credentials with her Swordsman affiliation, and you’ve got something vile.

El Rancho just got done proving that walk-ons don’t pan out, and so this precious little spark plug of educational enthusiasm decides she can make this shaky arrangement work. Conceit knows no boundaries.

The ship known as Pioneer football has just struck ice, but it will take Captain Monica a while before she understands the ramifications of her poor navigation.

  • Pioneer Alumni

As someone who takes great pride in being a Titan. I
heard that one of our own alums interview for the position with 20 plus years of coaching experience and several CIF championships did not even make the second round of interviews. This smells like an inside job all the way. Who better to change the culture in “Titan Land” then one of us. A proven winner in the classroom as a teacher and on the field as a coach, this person even had ties to La Habra football, I think they are winning a little; still didn’t get a fair shot. That is very up-setting and Pioneer fans should be pissed about Monica and her decision making skills. Perhaps, she got rid of Ramon to bring in the St. Paul group all along, or maybe her husband had some say in all this. He is a coach and is close friend with the Willigs. Something sure is rotten in Denmark.

  • Pioneer Parent

It’s really amazing how negative people can be. As a Pioneer parent, I can tell you that my son is very enthusiastic about the chance to play for Coach Willig. He has a very positive attitude and has lots of great experience. Why don’t you supposedly loyal alumni get behind the new coach and give him a fair chance?
Coach Willig was selected through a process in which many people were involved on the interview panel, not just the principal. Talk to them about the candidates. They will tell you that Coach Willig was the most qualified candidate. Don’t trash your own school just because your candidate was not selected.

  • Real Pioneer Alum

@PiHi Parent: Phony post if I ever read one. Real Pioneer alum are tired of losing and tired of being pushed around. How could your phony son be looking forward to being coached by this guy,?? no one knows a thing about him except Oviedo and cronies. The only way a kid could know squat about this codger is if he paid for his academy. Nice try Willig or relative but your post is missing the ring of truth. It would be nice to get some answers from somebody as to who applied and was overlooked to hire this man.

  • Pioneer Parent

    “Real Pioneer Alum”:

Talk about phony posts. I’m sure you have posted under several names to make it seem as though yours is the majority opinion. Why don’t you talk to the players and parents about how excited they are to be coached by someone who believes that it can get done. You sound like someone personally connected to the old helpless regime that just made one excuse after another and always blamed the kids. Help or get out the way.

  • Questionable

Yes Pioneer Parent, why don’t you talk about the interview panel and who THEY selected as the clear # 1 choice for this job? It certainly was not Willig, but Monica went against their decision…

  • Pioneer Parent

    Questionable:
I have and you absolutely don’t know what you’re talking about. The only people upset with the hire are Juarez, his relatives, and his displaced coaches (which one are you?). The people who matter (players, parents, teachers, staff, and alums) are all excited about having someone who gives them hope and positive energy. Go Titans!

  • Pioneer Alumni

    Hey Pioneer Parent,

Do you believe that crap. There is always positive energy with a new hire… You are clueless…What do you know about Willig other than what Oviedo and her croonies are telling you. Help or get out of the way… That’s been the prolem for years people like you that don’t say anything, how long before you take notice this hire smells of conflict of interest, hire your husband’s best friend! What has Willig done over the years… You probably voted for Obama too. How is that change going for you?

  • anonymous

SO WHO WAS THE PIONEER ALUMN WITH 20 YEARS EXPERIENCE? PROVIDE A NAME, OR THE STATEMENT IS FALSE !!! IF IT IS TRUE THAT PIONEER PASSED UP ON THAT, THEN MONICA IS A FOOL !!! BUT UNTIL I HEAR OF OR READ THE NAME OF THIS PHANTOM PERSON, ITS ALL A TALL TALE !!!

  • anonymous

DONT WORRY PIONEER, YOU STILL HAVE SOCCER..LOL

  • the truth

Head coach passed up Steve Randall class of84grad.

  • Coach Randall

    Hey People,

Everyone needs to calm down. I usally do not respond to these sites,I was just reading trying to find out more about coach Willig. However, I feel I need to share some info.I am not sure who Pioneer Alumni is but he or she does know a few facts.I did interveiw for the job the(Steve Randall class of 1984)yes, I have won Cif Championships@ Whittier Christian 1985,1990 as an assistant and I did coach at La Habra in 1999, 2003-2005. I was upset and disappointed that I was not selected. I would have enjoyed the challenge of turning around a program that meant so much to me as a player and student. Thus, we need to keep in mind that players read all these comments too. They are the ones we must support, they have no choice on who they play for, the players just want to play despite the coaching. Ramon gave 15 years of his life coaching our boys and Coach Willig is the man now, both have my respect. Furthermore, talk is cheap the only question that needs to be answered is… if you are a pioneer fan what are you doing to assist PiHi inorder for them to be successful? I will continue to support the program no matter what because I love the school and I am thankful for the experience I had and will always be a Titan. Work your ass off boys, and prove people wrong. As for me, I will be ok and continue my job as offensive line coach at Citrus College. Good luck Titans!

  • anonymous

WOW, THEY PASSED UP ON RANDALL…..THIS WOULD HAVE BEEN A GOOD START FOR SOMEONE LIKE HIM WITH TIES TO PIONEER. DECENT RESUME, AND SOME COLLEGE COACHING EXPERIENCE. HARD TO THINK WHAT WAS NOT GOOD ENOUGH TO GIVE THIS GUY A SHOT. WOULD ANYBODY TIED TO PIONEER LIKE TO EXPLAIN. ISNT IT ALWAYS BETTER, TO LET SOMEONE WITH SOME KIND OF HISTORY WITH A SCHOOL HAVE A SHOT AT THINGS? ITS NOT LIKE THIS GUY ONLY COACHED POP WARNER.

  • fan

good luck trying to get the Alums behind this staff!know your history!

  • Pioneer Alumni

Randall thanks for your post…you’re a class act. Hang for a couple more years you may get a shot at Pioneer again, Iam sure.

To fan said, what is your problem and what history are you talking about.Pioneer grads are aware of the history between ST.Paul and Pioneer the filming issue from freeway over 40 years ago…it’s about getting the right guy. Some knew about one of our own interviewing or two and they went outside. Who better to give a shot then a Titan. Just concerned the playing field wasn’t level.

  • TITANic

Monica doesn’t give one hot damn about Pioneer or the name Titans; she’s only out to help her own people. It’s the same story from Washington, too: act like you care while you crap all over everybody.

This lady, who revels in being called “doctor”, believes she has a handle on everything under the sun. The one thing she might NOT know is that the Pioneer parents don’t have unlimited money to buy playing time from the Willig brothers, and this is why there will be a rebellion against them, and soon.

  • Meta World Pioneer

Looks like Coach Juarez’ posse is working overtime on the blog. Dude didn’t even have a booster club or game day program. He gave up years ago and started making excuses and blaming the players. Now he will have his people talk bad about the new coach, because if the new coach is a success, that will make him look bad. The players are pumped and that is all that matters. We’ll see in the fall. The rest is all talk. Let’s go Titans!

  • anonymous

LOL…..wow, they should have given the job to the specialist in high school football, WORLD META PIONEER. you sound like you have a side of your own. what do booster clubs and gameday programs have to do with if whether or not a team can pick up a W on any given day? your an idiot. you are probably an ex pioneer player that never got any playing time because you were worse than the guy that was getting burned on the field, and are now happy that you think justice has been served, because the coaching did not make you better. some people just belong on the side lines buddy!

  • anonymous

I AM CALLING IT, PIONEER WILL GO 1-9 AT BEST NEXT YEAR. THAT IS UNLESS, NEW STUDENTS ALL OF SUDDEN START ENROLLING NEXT YEAR JUST LIKE THEY DID THIS YEAR FOR THE BASKETBALL TEAM. IS THE WHOLE BASKETBALL THING FACT OR FICTION. PEOPLE HAVE MENTIONED IT ONCE OR TWICE.

  • TITANic

Doc Oviedo and hubby are obviously trying to breathe life into the cadaver known as Titan sports by hiring coaches who promise to bring transfers.

That works mainly in basketball, where two or three top ballers can make a team good, but not so well in football. Looking at Titan basketball, now in its first year of this tactic, we can see that the better hoopsters are shunning this obsolete institution.

The Willigs will enjoy a brief honeymoon period when things may look hopeful, but when the favoritism and demands for money become blatant, the core group of local boys will bolt.

  • Titan Alumni

    Steve,

Thank you (sincerely) for deleting my earlier post. When assuming that Pioneer Parent was a specific parent I meant to use talented son. Apologies for the earlier post.

Your action of deleting the post shows us “trolls” that you indeed have control of your blog. Please do so more diligently, this could be a great source if moderator supervises it much closely. I remember that Murray’s blog would not post comments immediately, I think he might have reviewed them first.

    Again, apologies to all.

  • Coach Slayer

Willig off to a bumpy start at PIHI. Snobby attitude with players and unhappy with facilities. I see problems ahead for this senior citizen.

  • Nate

    Coach Slayer,
“Snobby attitude”? What do you expect, he is a St. Paul guy? Not a good hire…

  • TITANic

Willig apparently suffers from the same affliction that beset Rick Zepeda at El Rancho: he thinks public school football can be coached the same way as St Paul football, and the man is positively astonished that things are not like they were at his old High School.

Memo to Chuck: parents are more supportive of your coaching tactics at private schools because they’re writing a big tuition check every month, and they want to make sure they’re getting their money’s worth. Parents of public school kids view the school thing as basically free, so they don’t give as much of a damn about it.

If this reality pains you too much, it’s not too late to exit gracefully before things really blow up. If you choose to stick around, you must swallow your pride and simply focus on extracting the maximum dollars of bogus training fees from your student athletes, not forgetting to flip some cash to Monica.

  • anonymous

Ok TITANic just because your parents didnt care about you and send you to a public bad school because it free man nothing is free some one pays and thats your no caring parents, whos not envole why? Hey I know to many kids in your clan right. Willig will change everything at pioneer some winning first and if the kids put extra physical training they will win more.

  • mike

since you guys ar talking crap about coach Willig take real look at the other school known as Whittier High coached by Vizco Ancich so far has a 1-11 conference play. He just lost to Pioneer last Friday. Pioneer has good chance of making it to the playoffs this year. The weird thing about is Willig and Ancich came out of St Paul at the same time

  • sgvFBfan789

Coach Willig is a clown. 3-7 the past 3 years (I’ll give you those forefits)! Give me a break! Either at the bottom or right above the bottom of the Del Rio every year.
    Fans
in Titan nation should be upset…Coach Vinnie from El Rancho
interviewed for the Pioneer job and got turned down…I wonder how El
    Rancho did this year?!?
If you were never a head coach before the age of 50, there is a reason for it (probably not very good). The only opportunity given is through old crony connections: M. Oviedo.
    Zero wins against quality opponents.
Please don’t compare Coach Willig with Coach Ancich…One is politician/security guard/best friend’s with the principal/Coach, the other is an honest/Teacher/Coach.
