CIF-SS D-4 Boys Soccer Championship: El Rancho looking to be crowned again

Can El Rancho do it again?

El Rancho High School, ranked No. 5 nationally by ESPN, is one of the top boys soccer teams in the country and arguably the No. 1 team in the state.
But are the Dons the best in CIF-Southern Section Division 4?
The answer comes today for El Rancho, which looks to score its second consecutive CIF-SS title when it faces Crescenta Valley at Warren High School in Downey for the division crown at 5 p.m.
“I’m proud of the kids and the way they’ve played this season,” El Rancho coach Dominic Picon said. “They’ve overcome a lot of adversity and despite all the accolades haven’t gotten too high, or two low. They’ve been pretty even keel.
“I expect the same (today). They’ve played in big games the past few years and I just hope they don’t get overwhelmed with all pageantry of the game.”

Thank you Steve for the special article, and thanks to the ER coach and team for such an extraordinary season, culminating in tonight’s title match. Blue and gray…all the way!

  • erdons

ER gentlemen its time to go to work and do what you do!

  • Soccer

To days outcome is unpredictable but Im gonna go out on a hunch Dons win in a tough one tonight. Big Blue!

  • Steely Don

The word Don has connotations of gentlemanly behavior, and that is what the entire El Rancho family showed tonight in relinquishing the CIF crown to Crescenta Valley. We congratulate the Falcons and wish them luck in the upcoming state playoffs.

  • El Rancho

What an incredible season Dons, we are proud of you. I assure you that record crowd tonight is too.

    Best of luck CV Falcons

Do we still hold a possible chance to play in the State Playoffs?? I know last season we beat Oak Park and they still made the regional playoffs after they lost to us..

  • olddon

Okay La Serna we ER people are pulling for you girls, bring home that ring!

Great run Dons! Next year looks favorable with most of the team back.

@ elrancho thats a good question, I thought (not knowing) only CIF winners play in the State games. It would be nice if the Dons got in if that are possible.

  • Dons

Oak Hills played for State last year, who did they play? Steve Ramirez would know.

  • Dont know soccer

It just wasnt destined to be for the Dons. They dominated the game but could not put the ball in the net. El Rancho came very close on several occasions I think we out shot them by a lot not sure by how much. Now I cant for next season and judging by the huge crowd with many people having to stand Im not alone. Pico Rivers Soccer City

Time to move El Rancho to D1 or D2… great season though.
Are there any academy players on this team? and why was the roster not on Max Prep?

  • anony

Ive been looking at the 2011 Oak Hills record; they played in the State games. Oak Hills defeated Reedley and won at Claremont, eventually loss to Santa Barbara who loss to the 2011 Cal champions San Clemente, who we lost to (note we out shot SC also). So I guess elrancho is right maybe we have a chance at a State game.

  • Steve

@ Anonymous 2, the missing roster on Max Prep should be accredited to the coaching staff thats their responsibility, if they choose to post it.

On any academic players, last years squad all were honor students. This years team I believe so only because its almost the same team. They have a great example in their coach who is a history teacher at El Rancho and an Attorney.

You said it is time to move up D1-D2 only time will tell Anonymous 2.

BEST OF TIMES TO MY DONS, I KNOW YOURE FEELING IT RIGHT NOW.

    Man what happen?…………….

You lost the game because the passes were late and not crisp. If you remember, you scored against Cathedral with numbers up top and with great passing. You have talented forwards but the speed isn’t at the same level. Crescenta had size, muscle and speed. And they didn’t let you breath. They were not giving you room to play. You should have moved two defenders play more offensive. And have that big #14 with two of your defenders marking him. You guys have good defenders. That #14 wasn’t skilled at all. All he had was speed and size. Look at everytime he handled the ball. He couldn’t get through. Not once. He scored because your defender made a bad mistake.

  • rick

Crescenta was very defensive. You needed to attack with numbers. You did it at the end. But it was to late. Both teams didn’t play to there capabilities. Crescenta attacked four times and scored on three of them. Play to your strengths, wich is clean, crisp, fast and creative passing. I just didn’t see the urgency in El Rancho’s game. You are very goog and are very fortunate to have so many students in your school and can have the luxury of having so much talent. Not to move you and Cathedral would just be a crime. I think even you guys know that. I wish you good fortune.

  • rick

Your players are very classy. Even after the game they gathered themselves and came over to thank and show appreciation to there very loyal fans. That is a very great full team.

I was at the game for Paramount vs. Channel Islands. Paramount 2-1 over Channel Islands. I just left at half time and Milliken (Long Beach) is dominating over Ventura 5-1. To good, to fast and very quick thinking forwards. Este equipo no perdona. Milliken wilwin div.1 championship.
