SOFTBALL RANKINGS: La Habra moves to the top

Here’s this week’s area softball top five, where La Habra, after big wins over Fullerton and Sunny Hills to move into first in the Freeway League, takes over the top spot from La Mirada, which dropped after going 0-2 last week.

DAILY NEWS TOP FIVE
1. La Habra (16-8) — The Highlanders appear to have found their second win, getting a big sweep over Fullerton and Sunny Hills to move into first in the Freeway League. La Habra is No. 4 in Division 4, but the key for a long playoff run depends on Esparza, Thomas and consistency in the circle.
2. La Mirada (17-7) — The Mats, who drop to No. 2 after losing to Warren in the Showtime Tournament finals, most-important series come the final two weeks when they have a home and home against Mayfair beginning Wednesday, then face Cerritos next week. I like their chances to win the Suburban and this team is capable of another run to the finals.
3. Schurr (16-6) — How good are the Spartan?. CIF-SS says very good. Schurr is currently ranked No. 2 in Division 5. But a title tilt vs. rival Montebello awaits.
4. El Rancho (16-4) — It’s a big week for the Dons, who can all but wrap up the Del Rio League with wins over La Serna today and against Santa Fe on Thursday.
5. La Serna (10-9) — The Lancers have been inconsistent. But found themselves in time to upset Cal last week. Is El Rancho next today?
