WALNUT –
German Fabela made sure the tradition lived on.
Andres Vega set the standard for La Serna High School last season with a victory in the CIF-Southern Section Division 2 400 meters. On Saturday afternoon at Mt. SAC, Fabela did the same thing in this year’s divisional finals.
“La Serna going two in a row is just awesome,” he said. “I had some great competition and I had to pull it through.”
The senior won the 400 in 48.03 seconds, a personal best. It also qualified him for Friday’s CIF-SS Masters Meet at Cerritos College.
“Why I ran like this is because of all the training I do,” he said.
“Thanks to my coaches. I don’t know if it’s the hardest event, but it is one of the hardest. You have to put all of your strength and speed into it and hope for the best.”

Fabela laid in the grass for nearly half an hour after the conclusion of the race. He said he woke up not feeling well.
Before hitting the grass, he sprinted to the lead on the backstretch and had a 5-meter lead going into the turn. He was never challenged.
“I put the hammer down,” he said of the move.
He won by 0.77 seconds. Last year, he was second to Vega. Fabela finished seventh in Saturday’s 200 in 22.00.
Cantwell Sacred Heart’s Adam Aguirre, who advanced to the CIF State meet last season, won the Division 4 high jump title with a 6-foot-7 jump. He won by 2 inches and qualified eighth for the Masters.
Whittier Christian’s Kellian Hunt scored a pair of Division 4 second-place finishes.
“I’ll take two seconds,” she said.
She was second in the 1,600 in 5:04.19. She rallied in the final 400 meters.
“The plan was to stay with the main pack and kick it in,” the senior said. “I let them get away from me a little bit, but I made up for it in the last 300. I’m happy with it.”
She was also second in the 3,200 in 11:15.90.
“The weather got to me a bit,” she said. “But I’m happy how it turned out.”
Santa Fe’s Lucas Bedolla was sixth in the Division 1 long jump in 22-8. He did it on his first attempt. The effort was enough to give him the No. 9 spot for next week’s Master’s Meet.
Whittier Christian’s Lina Arreola was fifth in the Division 4 high jump at 4-11.
La Mirada’s Taylor Jones was sixth in the Division 2 800 in 2:16.97 and California’s Justine Romo was sixth in the Division 1 1,600 in 11:11.63.
Santa Fe’s Cristian Garcia was eighth in the Division 1 3,200 in 9:37.00 and La Mirada’s Tomei Johnson was eighth in the Division 2 triple jump at 34-3 3/4.
El Rancho’s Bailee Henry was ninth in the Division 1 1,600 in 5:03.35.
