The Servite team which manhandled St Paul 38-6 last night was sophomore-heavy, with no big name stars. This was Asante’s best chance to shine against a top-level team, and he absolutely failed.

Look for a death-defying struggle just to make the playoffs, and in that event, a first-round tossing. The Asante experiment is officially a bust.

  • SPHS ALUM

First of all prayers and best wishes to the families of the three players sent to the hospital last night. May they have a speedy recovery.

As a former St Paul player I feel the need to speak up for the injustice that’s happening to our football program and our players.

No cohesion among the entire team. No distinct coaching leadership. No passion from coach Asante and two of his sidekicks. This all amounts to a storied Swordsmen football program sinking fast.

From what I saw at the game last night I blame Asante not only for the loss but also for the complete breakdown of the individual spirit of our players and team. Where was Asante when our boys needed a kick in the ass or a high five or a ‘rally the troops’ speech!!?? His arrogance is disgusting! His favoritism for the transfers is absolutely and completely repulsive!! So much so I want to puke. I rode the transfer train in the beginning and was excited. But seeing how Asante favors them is unacceptable. You can see it at practice. You can see it pre-game and during the game. Why is this allowed to happen??? Answer Asante!

I’ve looked beyond the win/loss record because that is not the issue here. I love the preseason schedule! Everyone knew it would be challenging. But seriously!!! Asante has caused such a disruption in the boys it is so evident in their poor performances every game! Last year the boys played with much more fire in their heart under the has been Ancich. Asante, at this point, couldn’t fire up a BBQ. Hopefully that can change but I won’t hold my breath…

And another thing.. Why the hell wasn’t Asante in Troy Thomas’ grill (Servite coach) after a cheap shot by one of his db’s that sent DJ to the hospital??? Troy teaches his kids to play dirty and a helmet to the back of a defenseless receiver is something I won’t stand for. I have video of the hit and I’ll be sending it to the CIF office for their review. Asante should have stood up for what’s right and defended our players on this!!!

Aceves and the SPHS Admin have to be blinded by his flashy (egotistical right?) suits and so-called promises. The suit thing…. Really? Wear a St Paul shirt and wear it with pride!!! Don’t make yourself such an individual? Make a legacy at St Paul and then wear whatever suit you want!! If Aceves can’t see what’s going on then unfortunately nothing’s going to change.

A$$ante has to change things or we the parents will!!! Stand up parents and be heard!

As parents we will continue to cheer for our boys no matter what adversity they face!

    GO SWORDSMEN!

  • reality

Sadly this is what often happens when you schedule teams you have no business playing yet.You sacrifice your sons for sake of the coaches ego. Sick, Sick Sick.

  • Blue & Gold

    @SPHS Alum,
Iam on your side bud,but you have to make a stronger case we havent really done nothing for 4 seasons and thats with a powder puff schedule,Yes the complaints were down cause coach A gave the school wins by the watered down schedule,I would like to side with you but the reality is if were going to play the big boys Asante or any coach has to recruit some big boys BOTTOM LINE……Cause Machismo is not goimg to cut it anymore ,you know it and I know it!

  • Adios Asante

Asante’s suits are a statement by the man that he feels special and separate from the people around him. I say let’s give him the separation he craves by shipping his unique behind out of town.

  • http://msn.com SP Dad

First off,a god speed recovery for all the injured players and heartfelt prayers to all the families. Last night was an ugly experience for any parent or fan. The refs should have sent an early message by ejecting players on late hits. As a coach you should be livid about some of the penalties Servite committed, even if it meant being kicked out of the game. Coach needs to protect his players first.
Second, the school principal should be the first one to be held accountable for hiring the coach. So I hope she does the right thing and resign with the coach.
It’s not too late late to salvage the season.

  • Football fanatic

    Really?

St.Paul people? I’ve never seen so many front runners in my life! This is what you asked for and this is what you recieved. You people talk about guts and glory at what expense? Get a grip! Even with Anchic or whatever his name was the end results would still be the same. It’s not the coaches fault but the parents who have zero clue about the talent that dwells there. The egotistical alumni who think that were still in the 70′s. Let it go people. You have no business playing the teams your playing. So at the end of the day being smart is better then having balls! Your crap of a school is finished. Take the whippings and prepare next year for the likes of Whittier, Cantwell, Cal hi and some of the lifelong mediocre teams that you can compete with. The legacy has been gone for 25 years now. turn the page people!!

  • Blue & Gold

    @ Football Fanatic
Bottom Line these people that talk really are going on emotion, when you peel back the layers St Paul has not accomplished nothing for years, there is no Alumni to speak of,no (significant) monies coming from Alumni,The people up at the top know whats going on ,I can only speculate that these people making noise ……IS JUST THAT …They have no real agenda other than smoke and mirrors every one beyond thir world reads it and see’s right through them !!

  • titan alum

Pioneer got robbed on friay night. bad calls throughout the game kept the titans from picking up the W. Dont worry coach willig, we will get la serna next week.

  • TITANic

The high point of Pioneer’s season will prove to be the win over mighty Glenn. This calls for the hoisting of a new banner in the gym, unveiled at a gala ceremony attended by district lumnaries and the city mayor. Dr Oviedo can use the occasion to deliver a sharp retort to all who had questioned her coaching hire.

  • Observer 23

I was at the game because my son attends this school. Felt that St. Paul should not be playing teams like Servite, the school needs to play in the Del Rey League. They need a new coach that understands the community and has pride in St. Paul not the clown in the suit. I could care less if St. Paul wins another game, but can tell you that I heard a lot of St Paul alumni in stands ask for a coaching change. It is about to get worse.

  • Another Titan Alumni

    TITANic and titan alumni,

You guys are funny. Pioneer will go 0-5 in league. WUHSD West Field will not be built . And Willig might leave after the season. I’m sure this is exactly how Oviedo envisioned it.

  • Adios Asante

Contrast the approaches of the two leaders last Friday: Troy Thomas, in the face of a 1-3 start, was highly animated and viscerally willing his young team to perform. Elijah Asante, also facing a 1-3 start, projected the demeanor of a detached observer, a man who, to an outsider, might be mistaken for a school administrator. It has often been said that a team reflects the personality of its coach; Friday we saw proof of this theory.

  • TITANic

Too bad about the new field being axed; I suppose the spare cash is going to give Monica a raise. In lieu of any major improvements to historic Titan stadium, can we at least obtain a new flagpole and flag? The current equipment looks like it was salvaged from a shipwreck.

Blog Interceptor here. Just found this blog on Coach Assante’s laptop:

Hate Hate Roller Skate! Don’t hate the playa. Hate the game! HaHaaaa!

Don’t be trippin at the atheletes I recruited uhhhh I mean attracted. Scooby Doo’s gettin me a ring! Run the ball! Run the ball. Run the ball! And when we done, run it some more! I’ll run it even when we losing and down by 3 touchdowns! Ancich ain’t got nuthin on me! HaHaaaa!

I don’t need to be jumpin or freakin on the sidelines like Thomas or Rollinson. I might break a sweat! And that would ruin my suit! HaHaaaa!

Don’t trip at my fly threads neither! Even if I lose, I still look straight GQ in my suit! HaHaaaa!

I got Aceves in my back pocket! So no one tellin me nothin! This is my program now biatches! HaHaaaa!

  • Signature Win

Asante’s sole preseason victory came against a decimated La Habra squad, a group which has reverted to its time-honored losing ways. If St Paul retains this coach, a switch to the Suburban or Del Rio league would be in order, with success even there very much in doubt.

  • Titan 2010

is the new field really axed? or has it just been postponed till after the season? wouldnt put it past them to not build the field though

  • http://msn.com SP Dad

Give the reigns to Avina, put Aceves back in the classroom and hire Robles away from Salesian, then you’ll have positive changes. Yes,I do believe St.Paul should be aligned with Damian, Paraclete, Cathedral, St Francis, Harvard Westlake, Bishop Montgomery… At this point, Aceves hasn’t done anything to attract more students to ST.Paul. The economy has also affected other private schools, yet their enrollment has doubled or remained steady. I’m paying about $9000.00 for just one kid. yes! I have the proof.

  • titan alum

why is pioneer not getting any coverage? they are going to be an up and coming team. your going to miss a good opportunity terrazas. pioneer will be the team that shocks the del rio league this year. coach willig will have the boys ready. GO TITANS. come on boys, lets show what the coaching change was all about. we have the talent.

  • The Chef

I use to enjoy reminding the occasional (obnoxious) St Paul fanatic that despite an excellent heritage, this was not the 80′s and the school did not have the talent or the resources to be making claims of greatness or Dynasty. By and large, most of the St Paul faithful were proud but rational fans that were committed to the success of their team but more committed to the success and well being of their children that made up the team. This season I was genuinely excited to see the school take a gamble with an unconventional hire to attempt to shake up the status quo and infuse the team with new talent and new Leadership.

It now seems from the outside, that the St Paul Administration has gravely erred in one key element in this Leadership Selection Decision. The fundamental principal rule when you decide to “go against convention” in seeking a new leader is MAKE ABSOLUTELY SURE THAT THE NEW LEADER IS MORE CONCERNED WITH THE LONG TERM SUCCESS OF THE ORGANIZATION THAN WITH HIS OWN SUCCESS!!! If you don’t ensure this fundamental principal, you will experience some or all of the following: 1)The new leader will make random decisions to draw attention to himself to the detriment of the organization 2)The new leader will strongly and unfairly favor his new vision and those whom he brings in that buy into his vision to the detriment of the organization 3) The new leader will cause a great deal of contention and infighting in the organization because chaos brings attention 4) The new leader will not accept accountable and will deflect criticism to those that criticize his vision questioning their motives and their knowledge. 5) Although there may be some temporary successes, all of the above will result in failure far in excess of what should be achieved given the talent and resources that the organization possesses.

It would seem that the St Paul Administration should realize these signs above and accept that in an attempt to swing for the fences, they were drawn to a attention seeking leader with an over-sized personality and ego and they failed to hire a leader who was committed to the long term success of the WHOLE TEAM AND ALL OF THE CHILDREN THAT MAKE IT UP. From the outside it is painful to see the Parents, Alumni and most importantly the Players be tore apart by the ill advised tactics of this leader. It is time for the Administration to put the well being of the organization ahead of their own egos and make the only rational decision to fix the situation before there is no organization to fix.

  • TITANic

@ Titan Alum: I too lament the lack of Pioneer coverage…can’t those buffoons see how HOT Titan football is at the moment, or at least sense the wave of dominance you’re about to unleash on an unprepared Del Rio league?

The sporting world was put on notice when the Titans beat top-rated Glenn, yet nary a whimper was heard from the media about this shocker. Since that epic triumph, Willig has cleverly held-back his best effort, which he will now unveil in an unprecedented attack of shock and awe.

I salute you, Dr. Oviedo, coach Willig and the greater Titan Nation for your inspirational feats of glory.

  • Rent-a-Team

The Archdiocese is wealthy and powerful, and has condoned the practice of ‘rent-a-player’ for years. Why not go one step further and RENT the entire Santa Margarita team, which would play on Thursdays and Saturdays, leaving them available for their regular Friday games in Orange County?

It should be clear that the only thing which matters is to see x-number of kids dressed in Swordsmen uniforms kicking butt on the field. The Archdiocese has the money; all that remains is to payoff the right people and voila…you’ve got a top team. Asante can continue to stroll the sidelines modeling suits, so everyone would be happy.

  • Another Titan Alumni

    TITANic,

I too was thinking the same thing. Upset the ever powerful glenn eagles then loose purposely to get back under the radar (way under). When the time is right surprise all of the southeast division by pulling a westco on the lancers when league opens. I believe that this is how Oviedo and Willig planned it.

TITANic, just wondering, are you an alumni?

Also, word around is that the construction crew realized that the actual cost of building the west field (cal high’s being the east) far exceeded their bid. The renditions alone, which I saw a couple of years back, must have cost a pretty penny.

  • TITANic

@ Another Titan Alumni: Seriously speaking, the two WUSD fields are OVERSIZED for the typical crowds which attend the games. Building new stadiums will only mean that a bunch of NEW seats will likewise go unused.

The ridiculous usage of Cal High stadium for the championship game aside, all that really needs doing is to upgrade the lights at Pioneer, and optionally add pressboxes to each facility. New paint once every 50 years might help too.

  • The Chef

    @TITANic

Steely Don you find another identity to hide behind while slinging your sarcasm. Weren’t you the one to play total biyatch about the condition of the Cal Hi Field only to now contend that improvements do not need to be made. You women and your decorating issues. You should leave Football Facility questions to those that actually have used them and spend your time inventing new aliases for yourself while practicing your flute solo. Check your facts, Cal High field is used by 3 different high schools and most games have capacity home crowds. The field will also accommodate other events like graduation that presently have to be held at outside rented facilities.
It is clear that your motivation is a desire to have the El Rancho facilities remain the League largest. Venue envy is an ugly addiction.

Give it back to Avina …..so we can play Shuur,Norwalk,Garfield…..and go 20 -20 the last 4 years ,why do you want to go backwards pops, you do have the choice to move to another school if you dont like whats happening,I surely wouldnt stick around if I dont like what I am seeing…..Its a free country Dad :)

  • TITANic

@ Chef: I claim no affiliation with the blogger Steely Don, but I do ache for his return to this forum. My TITANic designation is focused on the fast-sinking institution on Benavon, which Oviedo has been enlisted to rescue.

Regarding your report on Whittier field usage, I am aware of the attendance numbers, and packed houses occur mainly in your own mind. If, as Mr. Don has suggested, there are deficiencies in those facilities, the intelligent approach would be to remedy them quickly and cheaply, not to impulsively raze and rebuild.

  • http://msn.com SP Dad

    Cantiflas…
Look mijo/mija every legit football coach knows you build your team up with DEFENSE… Avina is a defensive coach.
The kids respect Avina both as a coach and teacher.
By the way, the coach does not have the sole decision in who they schedule. St Paul with less than 600 students and talent pool should be in a lower division, say 5 or 6.But then again some people will probably say “that’s not fair,
they’re a private school.” Finally, what I like about SP is the teachers do care about the kids and I have two athletic, college graduates from SP.
NO! this not a free country

  • Adios Asante

The fact is that by paying tuition at St Paul, you are casting a vote to retain Elijah Asante as coach. I suggest a mass boycott, by transferring at least 100 paying students to public schools until Asante is fired. If you lack the balls to do this, Aceves will simply laugh at you and keep things as they are.

  • prep fan

I agree. Too many people/parents come on to the blogs and complain about the disharmony and chaos at SP with the current SP coaching staff. There is power in numbers! If a large number of parents, students, alumni and fans get together and demand change, the principal and Archdiocese have to respond. The program should be about the boys…….they are the ones suffering.
