PICO RIVERA – El Rancho High School quarterback Joey Sanchez has experienced quite an impressive start to his senior season.

Sanchez has paced a powerful Dons offense that has scored 171 points in four games. El Rancho (3-1) has especially excelled the last two weeks, defeating Bell Gardens 52-28 and Montebello 57-48.

Last week at Montebello, Sanchez set a school record by rushing for 318 yards. He ran for touchdowns of 44, 1, 21 and 53 yards against the Oilers.

Sanchez also completed 11 of 19 passes for 91 yards.

Senior running back Johnny Garcia has given Sanchez a major helping hand. Garcia ran for a career best 228 yards against Montebello.

The Dons’ early success has Sanchez feeling optimistic about this season.

“It’s going great,” Sanchez said. “The offense is clicking very well. The offensive line is doing its job — creating holes for me and Johnny. We’re making it very hard for defenses. They don’t know what we’re going to do.”

Sanchez, a two-year varsity player, has led the Dons with both his arm and his legs. He has completed 42 of 63 passes for 642 yards and three touchdowns.

Sanchez has also rushed for a team-leading 637 yards and 12 scores. He is averaging 8.3 yards per carry.
