After having a bye last week, La Serna High School is preparing for Friday’s Del Rio League opener at Pioneer.

La Serna (4-1), which ended nonleague play Sept. 21 with a 39-16 loss to Norco, is ranked second in the latest CIF-Southern Section Southeast Division poll.

With their nonleague schedule behind them, the Lancers are focusing on league play.

“We had time to work on things we needed to work on, La Serna coach Margarito Beltran said of the bye week. “We used that time to regroup, make adjustments as we needed and get ready for league play.”

The Lancers will face a Pioneer team (1-4) that is seeking to snap a four-game losing streak. The Titans fell 59-7 to Laguna Beach last week.

“We are looking forward to the challenge,” Beltran said. “We have to make sure to take care of the ball and tackle and block well.”

The Lancers have averaged 212.6 rushing yards and 161 passing yards per contest.

Luke Gonzales, Nick McCarty and Bryce Oliver have formed a productive ground trio for the Lancers.

Gonzales has rushed for a team-leading 277 yards and three touchdowns on 45 carries. McCarty has run for 267 yards and four scores on 41 attempts. Oliver has added 238 yards and five touchdowns on 48 carries.
