LA HABRA – La Habra High School started quickly and finished fast in an 11-6 victory over visiting Sonora in a Freeway League boys water polo match Thursday.

The Highlanders (4-2 league), who held a 5-2 halftime lead, never trailed.

Bernie Hefner, Ben Russell and Sean Pederson each scored two goals for the Highlanders, who entered this week ranked No. 7 in the CIF-Southern Section Division 4 poll.

Nick Anderson scored twice to lead the visiting Raiders (0-6 league).

After taking a three-goal lead after two quarters, La Habra seized control by outscoring Sonora 3-1 in the third quarter.

It was the Highlanders’ second triumph over the Raiders this season. La Habra won the first meeting 19-4 on Oct. 2.

“We beat Sonora by a more significant margin before,” La Habra coach David Edwards said. “We were coming off a loss to Sunny Hills (9-8) on Tuesday and that took some of the wind out of our sails. We just wanted to come back, get a win and just play together as a team again.

“When we’re on, we play really well. When we’re off, we’re terrible. We need to find some consistency.”
