California High School’s boys cross country team is headed for the national stage.

The Condors continued to build upon their already terrific season last Saturday by capturing second place at the CIF State Championships at Woodward Park in Fresno.

They scored 127 points to finish behind first-place Arcadia, which had 53. That strong finish lifted the Condors to the Nike Cross Nationals scheduled for Saturday in Portland, Ore.

“We’re on cloud nine right now,” California coach Tony DiMarco said. “It’s pretty exciting. The school is treating us great right now. It’s a pretty awesome feeling actually. It’s always fun to get recognized for your accomplishments.”

Sam Bautista was California’s top performer at the state meet, completing the course in 15 minutes, 35 seconds to take 16th place.

Leo Corcoran ran a 15:37 to earn 20th place for the Condors.

Jose Pacheco (34th, 15:45), Matlazomatl Rojas (45th, 15:56) and Josh Roldan (53rd, 16:02) rounded out the Condors’ top five runners.

California won the tiebreaker for second place against Carlsbad when Chris Ramirez (71st, 16:09), who was the Condors’ sixth-best performer, finished ahead of Carlsbad’s No. 6 runner Sean Unger (86th, 16:16).
