High School Wrestling: California Condors don’t have letdown in win

WHITTIER – California High School, coming off perhaps its biggest wrestling dual meet victory in years on Tuesday over Santa Fe, didn’t let up on Thursday and easily defeated visiting Whittier, 63-18, in another Del Rio League match.

The Condors are now 2-0 in league, while the Cardinals fell to 0-2.

With the emotional win over perennial league champion Santa Fe, California could have easily overlooked Whittier, but the Condors’ depth was too much for the Cardinals, as they had seven byes out of the 14 weight classes.

“It’s a nice feeling,” California coach Doug Loo said. “From my point of view, the guys put in a lot of work, not just this week, but the whole offseason during the summer. They put a lot of time and effort in, and it’s good to see it paying off.”

Even on Thursday, everyone was still talking about the win over Santa Fe, the Condors’ first win over the Chiefs in 12 years.

The talk ended quickly as the first match at 106 pounds ended just 33 seconds into the first period as sophomore Brandon Wasson, who wrestled in place of Richard Pocock, was leading 4-2 before his quick pin.

Pocock, along with Elias Mercado and Adrian Chavez, have won their weight classes in three tournaments this season. Chavez is undefeated this season with a 15-0 record and was named the MVP of the Brut Classic in the Rosemead tournament.
