WHITTIER – A strong fourth quarter lifted La Serna High School to a 53-38 girls basketball victory over Del Rio League rival California on Monday.

After the visiting Condors cut the Lancers’ lead to 39-32 after three quarters, La Serna took control with a 6-0 run to start the final quarter. A stingy defense held the Condors to six points in the game’s final eight minutes.

Brandee Alfaro scored a game-high 18 points to lead the Lancers (5-13 overall, 1-2 in league), who posted their first win in league.

“Brandee has stepped up a couple times this year,” La Serna coach Michelle Ortiz said. “She did a great job. “I’m very proud (of our girls’ effort). They didn’t let up and executed the offense.”

Melissa Madrigal started La Serna’s fourth-quarter surge with back-to-back jumpers that gave the Lancers a 43-32 advantage. Samantha Calderon and Maddy Fitzpatrick then increased La Serna’s lead to 47-33 with successful two-pointers. The Lancers didn’t look back from that point.

Cheyanne Garcia also played a key role in the Lancers’ offense by scoring 13 points.

Vivian Martinez scored 14 points to pace the Condors (4-11, 1-2).

Alfaro’s sharp outside shooting launched a good start for La Serna, which held the lead from beginning to end. Alfaro, who scored 16 of her points in the first half, made four 3-point baskets. Her first two 3-pointers gave the Lancers a 6-0 lead.
