WHITTIER – Schurr High School turned in a strong fourth quarter that helped it pull away for a 59-47 boys basketball victory over Santa Fe in a Monday game that was part of Pioneer High School’s second annual “I Have a Dream” Showcase.
Michael Ortega’s sharp outside shooting lifted the Spartans as he scored a game-high 16 points. He sank four 3-point baskets.
Schurr was trailing 37-36 in the latter stages of the third quarter when Jeff Madrigal delivered back-to-back layups that gave the Spartans a 40-37 lead.
Schurr (8-10), which outscored the Chiefs 17-8 in the fourth quarter, managed to hold on to its advantage for the rest of the game.
Schurr, leading 44-42, took control by going on a 15-5 run to finish the contest.
Spartans coach Rene Herrera hopes Monday’s triumph can serve as a “good confidence booster” for the Spartans going forward.
“It was a really good win for us,” Herrera said. “A lot of our kids stepped up (on Monday). They played with a lot of confidence.”
