MONTEBELLO – Both Schurr High School and visiting Keppel took the field Thursday hoping to improve their positions in the tight Almont League girls soccer standings.
Things, however, didn’t become much clearer after the Spartans and the Aztecs played to a 1-1 tie.
Both goals came in the second half with Schurr taking the lead on Carissa Ibarra’s goal, which was scored during the 53rd minute.
The Spartans’ lead didn’t last long as Keppel’s Nicole Kui tied the game on a penalty kick four minutes later.
Schurr (4-9-4 overall, 2-3-3 league), with Thursday’s deadlock, remains a half-game behind Keppel (6-7-2, 3-3-2) in Almont play with two league matches remaining for both squads. The Aztecs defeated the Spartans 1-0 in the first meeting between the two teams on Jan.15.
Montebello (11-4-4, 5-1-1) and Bell Gardens (8-5-6, 4-0-3) were atop the league standings entering Thursday’s play. Alhambra (6-6-5, 3-3-1), meanwhile, was tied for third place with the Aztecs going into Thursday.
“It was a big tie,” Keppel coach Jerry Zuniga said. “It’s a close league. Our girls have been improving since we started league. We have a lot of young players on our team. They play with a lot of effort.”
