As it gears up for its CIF-Southern Section postseason run, Schurr High School’s wrestling team is aiming high.

The Spartans, who won their fifth consecutive Almont League dual meet crown by posting a 5-0 record, turned in a stellar performance at last weekend’s league finals by producing seven league champions – Ruben Guzman (113 pounds), Adam Duarte (120), Eddie Guerra (126), Max Velez (132), Alex Chavez (138), Alan Caldera (152) and Ashton Heacock (195).

Schurr qualified all 14 of its wrestlers for the CIF-Southern Section Coastal Division individual championships, scheduled for Feb. 15-16 at Westminster High.

The CIF-SS individual meet, however, is just one thing on Schurr’s plate. The Spartans are preparing for Saturday’s CIF-SS Division 5 dual meet championships at Glenn High in Norwalk. Schurr drew the No. 4 seed for the tournament.

“It was a big accomplishment,” Schurr coach Jay Valencia said of winning the league title. “The guys have been wrestling well the last three to four weeks. Since Christmas, they have been on fire. Hopefully, we can carry that through with the big tournaments coming up. The No. 4 seed is still pretty good.

“We have had a really good season regardless of what happens the next couple weeks. We’ve talked to the guys and we are on the same page. The season is not over. We still have accomplishments (to reach). We have a long way to go. We have had a great season. I’m happy with it.”
