High School Boys Basketball: La Mirada edged by Mayfair

Mayfair High point guard Jarrod Sheffield stood out like a sore thumb, because, well, of his heavily taped right thumb.

La Mirada tried to exploit that, but Sheffield scored 11 of his team-high 14 points in the second half, including the go-ahead runner in the lane with 12.1 seconds left to lead the Monsoons to a thrilling 60-59 victory and their sixth consecutive Suburban League boys basketball championship.

“It’s a strained ligament and it’s getting worse and worse,” Sheffield said of the season-long injury. “I had to fight through it. I had to do what I had to do. We got the win, so it’s feeling pretty good.”

The Matadores (17-11, 10-2), looking to win the league title outright for the first time since 1982, grabbed their biggest lead of the game, at 59-56, after back-to-back 3-pointers from Charlie Reid with a minute to play in the game.

After Eze Egeonuigwe’s basket pulled Mayfair within 59-58, the Moonsons (21-5, 11-1) got the ball back with 18.3 seconds remaining. Coming out of a timeout, La Mirada had a plan to hold on for the win.
