Eight area teams are headed for the CIF-Southern Section girls basketball championships that will start later this week, according to pairings announced Sunday.

St. Paul drew the top seed for the Division 4A tournament that also features two other area teams in Cantwell Sacred Heart and Whittier Christian. The Camino Real League champion Swordsmen (16-11 overall, 7-1 league), who have a first-round bye, will start their postseason journey in a second-round game Saturday against either Bishop Conaty or St. Genevieve.

Sixth-seeded Cantwell (15-9), which took third in the Camino Real League with a 4-4 mark, visits University Prep for Thursday’s first-round game. University Prep took second in the Cross Valley League.

“It’s exciting,” Cantwell coach Omar Villalta said. “We like our chances in the playoffs. I like the way we’ve been playing lately.”

Whittier Christian (14-12), which posted a second-place 6-2 mark in the Olympic League, hosts No. 15-ranked Carpinteria in a first-round game Thursday.

The Division 1A and Division 2AA brackets feature two area teams.

El Rancho and Schurr are featured in the 1A field, which starts with Saturday’s first round.

The Dons (22-5), who tied Santa Fe and Whittier for first in the Del Rio League (8-2), will host South Coast League at-large team Aliso Niguel. El Rancho is seeded No. 13.
