Saturday CIF-SS championship round-up: El Rancho boys and La Serna girls capture soccer crowns; St. Paul girls basketball falls short

It will go down as a memorable Saturday for Whittier-area high school soccer.  Both the El Rancho boys and the La Serna girls captured CIF-Southern Section divisional championships.  El Rancho defeated Channel Islands 3-2 in the Division 3 boys soccer final, winning its second CIF crown in three seasons.  La Serna earned its first CIF title since 2008 when it beat Cabrillo of Lompoc 3-0 in the Division 5 girls soccer championship game.
St. Paul’s girls basketball team, however, wasn’t as fortunate as the Lancers or Dons. The Swordsmen fell on the short end of a heart-breaking 46-45 defeat to Camino Real League rival St. Monica in the Division 4A final.
