Jim Maier returns to coach St. Paul softball team after 13 years at CSDH

Jim Maier, who coached the St. Paul High softball team in the 1980s and 1990s, has been hired to once again coach the Swordsmen, the school has announced.

Maier just finished a 13-year stint at Cal State Dominguez Hills, a solid Division II program. Maier coached the Toros to 460 victories with an overall winning percentage of .627. In 2012, his team was one win away from the College World Series.

Maier guided the Swordsmen to 14 consecutive playoff appearances during his first stint and had a record of 300-78.

        OAS ,
Will that field be ready for this coming season ?

        • Once a Swordsman…

@ AMAT 73, Yes. Field, track and gym will be ready. We, also, should have the new softball field ready by the time the season starts.

            OAS,
Glad to hear that . Hopefully we had you the first of many losses to the LANCERS on that new field . All kidding aside good luck this season and I really hope you turn it around over there as having the rivalry alive and well is good for both schools .

            @ AMAT 73

No matter who’s up and who’s down St. Paul & Amat have too much history not to play each other every season.

Nice hire for the athletic programs at St Pauls!

Starting to get facilities in order. Now time to do the same with the programs. Starts with head coaches. Good picks for football and softball.

    who cares!

    • Once a Swordsman…

Actually, quite a few of us (and who don’t often comment on this blog) care. If you don’t, why comment?

  • Once a Swordsman…

Speaking of Coach Maier, his son, Jr. QB at St. Paul, Jake is attending the two day Rising Star Camp on the campus of The University of Southern California.

    Did SP getting any transfer?

    • Once a Swordsman…

Football, a few, but no big names. Several good softball players who will make a difference.

    OAS,
How do the in coming freshman look, any size or speed?

    • Once a Swordsman…

Have about 40 Freshmen. Some good size on the line, but untested because they were too big for youth football. Some good skill type kids with good speed. Very enthusiastic group who held their own today vs. Villa Park and Whittier. Long way to go, though.

I use to live across SP back in 80′s …I always wanted to play football and shave my head , but i went to whittier. I hope u guys can rebuild, it will take time…Good Luck OAS.

        • Once a Swordsman…

Thank-you, HSF. We understand it will take time and are willing to invest in the process. The enthusiasm by the young men in the program is great.

What St. Paul needs now is a head baseball coach.
Casey still can not win the Big Games.

    • Once a Swordsman…

My personal belief is that the AD should not be the head coach of any team. AD is a full time job. But, that’s just me.

      • Dan Erickson

Wait, Casey is the AD at St Paul’s? If so no wonder the sports programs are declining.
