La Serna hires Montebello’s Marino Angulo as boys head basketball coach

La Serna High athletics director Steven Hemenway on Monday told this newspaper the school has hired Marino Angulo as its boys head basketball coach. Angulo, who for the past 12 years was head coach at Montebello, succeeds Joshua Beaty. Beaty had taken over for longtime coach Mike Lowe, but after one year left to coach Crean Lutheran in Irvine.

Although Montebello was just 9-19 and 14-15 the past two years, respectively, Angulo led the Oilers to records of 19-10, 18-11, 28-2 and 27-4 the previous four. Hemenway is stoked to be getting a coach of his caliber.

“He has a fantastic track record, not only with basketball, but as a teacher,” said Hemenway, who said Angulo will teach social studies at La Serna. “Unbelievably happy. His experience, he’s known in the area. Every individual in the coaching as well as teaching ranks I talked to had nothing but tremendous things to say about him.”

La Serna was 11-15 last season under Beaty.
