La Serna, St. Paul set to meet again in Charter Oak tourney final

La Serna and St. Paul will meet on the softball field Saturday for the second time this season, and the championship of the Charter Oak Tournament will be at stake.
La Serna advanced with a 4-3 victory over Claremont in one semifinal at Big League Dreams Park in West Covina, and St. Paul topped Glendora 11-7 in the other. They’ll meet at 3 p.m. Saturday to determine the championship.
Just over a week ago, St. Paul beat the Lancers 2-1 at the Brea Olinda Tournament.
“We’re excited about being in the finals,” said St. Paul coach Jim Maier. “We get to play our neighbors again.”
La Serna has won seven consecutive games since losing to the Swordsmen and is 7-1. Friday’s victory improved St. Paul’s record to 6-2, and it avenged a loss to Glendora during pool play.
“St. Paul is a good, solid softball team,” said La Serna co-coach Mike Reed, whose team has won seven in a row since losing to the Swordsmen. “They’re well-coached, and they do everything right, so we’ll have to be on top of our game. It should be an exciting ballgame.”
