Zamora won’t return as Santa Fe girls BB coach

Matt Zamora will not return as Santa Fe High’s girls basketball coach after nine seasons.

Zamora, who was a walk-on coach, said he was told Tuesday his contract would not be renewed, but his job had been listed online as open before that.

Santa Fe athletic director Steve Hendry confirmed Wednesday that Zamora would not return as coach. Santa Fe principal Kevin Jamero released a statement about the coaching situation.

“While we have elected not to renew the contract of our varsity girls’ basketball coach, Santa Fe High School is committed to finding a new, strong coach for our girls. We can assure our athletes and parents that our new coach will uphold the spirit and team efforts for which Santa Fe is known, while also ensuring their coaching priorities are aligned with the expectations of the school. Since this is a personnel issue, we cannot go into detail about the reason the contract was not renewed. However, we can say that all decisions are made with our students as the priority.”

“It’s really shocking and extremely disappointing,” said Zamora, who won Del Rio League titles in 2006 and 2013. “A lot of my players are upset.”

Zamora said he’s worked hard to build the Santa Fe program into a popular and positive part of the community. The Chiefs made the playoffs every year under Zamora, and he said over a dozen former players have gone on to play in college.

“Not only is it bad for the girls basketball program,” said Zamora, “it’s bad for the school and the community as well.”

Zamora had a 143-109 overall record at Santa Fe and went 68-22 in the Del Rio League.
