Chiefs have been served some tough competition to begin season

It’s been a rough start for Santa Fe’s boys volleyball team, but one coach Chris Komer hopes will help the Chiefs make another long playoff run this season.
Santa Fe has played in tough tournaments at UC Santa Barbara and La Jolla, facing Division 1 and 2 teams from the Southern Section as well as good teams from San Diego, Arizona and Nevada. The Chiefs went 0-2 at UCSB and 1-4 in La Jolla, but they showed Komer a competitive nature that he likes.
“We’re competing with better teams than us right now,” he said, “which is a good sign. … We struggled (at UCSB and La Jolla), but we competed.”
Santa Fe will host Elizabeth Learning Center on April 3, and will open defense of its Del Rio League title April 9 at Whittier. The Chiefs advanced to last season’s CIF-SS Division 4 semifinal before losing to eventual champion Cathedral. They’re ranked No. 5 in the Division 4 poll this week.
Komer has been pleased with the play of senior middle blocker Cristian Perez, who was recently selected Del Rio League boys basketball MVP, and setter Nicolas Munoz. Marcos Gomez is a transfer from John Glenn who can play middle blocker or outside.
