St. Paul, Amat put on a slugfest in Del Rey Leaue showdown

The ball was flying all over the place Thursday at York Field when St. Paul and Bishop Amat met in a Del Rey League softball showdown.
The teams combined for four home runs and three doubles in the Swordsmen’s 7-5 victory. Amat center fielder Alyssa Barrera hit a pair of home runs and drove in three runs, and Lovie Lopez hit a three-run shot for St. Paul in the fifth. Taylor Ancona added a solo home run for the Swordsmen.
Both teams now sit atop the Del Rey standings at 2-1, and Thursday’s victory was the first at any level vs. Amat for St. Paul’s seniors.
“It’s been so long since St. Paul has been able to beat them,” St. Paul coach Jim Maier said. “… This was a big, huge confidence game for us.”
St. Paul pitcher Koreen Orozco allowed three runs in the first four innings but earned the complete-game victory.
“She could have folded easily but she didn’t,” Maier said. “She actually got better and stronger, and our energy level rose.”
