Cal’s Nieto taking a big-picture approach to Wednesday’s first-place showdown

Cal High baseball coach Tony Nieto is trying to keep Wednesday’s Del Rio League showdown with visiting Santa Fe in perspective.
“There are a lot of games left,” Nieto said this week as the Condors (9-4, 3-0) and Chiefs (6-8, 3-0) prepared to meet for the first time this season. “We want to win, absolutely, but it’s not a break-our-season kind of game.”
Each team will have 11 league games left following Wednesday’s game, and they’ll meet again for a two-game series May 7 and May 9.
Cal’s schedule this week also includes a home game against third-place La Serna (5-7-1, 2-1), and Nieto is likely trying to keep his players from getting overly excited for Wednesday’s game, only to come out flat Friday.
“It’s a challenging week,” Nieto said. “But we’re ready for it.”
