Whittier Christian, El Segundo each flash the leather

El Segundo dominated at the plate in Friday’s Whittier Christian Tournament opener against the Heralds, winning 8-1, but each team made some stellar defensive plays.
For El Segundo, it began with third baseman Alyssa Pelegrin diving face-first into a chain-length fence to catch a pop fly in foul territory. Center fielder Katherine Burner added a home run-saving catch against the fence in the fourth, and the Eagles played error-free all game.
Whittier Christian reliever Hannah Gabriel made several nice plays herself, stabbing a pair of line drives up the middle and grabbing a sharp grounder for an out at third in the sixth. Morgan Ryan and Erica Romo each made diving catches of line drives in the infield, and catcher Taylor Escobar made a nice snap throw to first baseman Katelyn Wagner for an out to end the sixth.
The eight-team tournament consists of two pools. Whittier Christian’s includes El Segundo, Bloomington Christian and Long Beach Wilson. The other pool has Bellflower, Cerritos, San Dimas and West Covina. Pool play continues Saturday.
