El Rancho’s victory vs. Cal made DRL more interesting

El Rancho will try to follow up its home victory over Cal on Wednesday when it visits the Condors in another Del Rio League game this afternoon.
Behind seven great innings by Vince Fuentes, the Dons earned a 2-0 victory Wednesday over Cal, which entered the game 7-0 in the DRL. Fuentes struck out four and scattered six hits. He out-dueled defending DRL Pitcher of the Year Daniel Alvarez, who struck out four in six innings.
“They kept us at bay,” Cal coach Tony Nieto said Friday morning. “El Rancho got us, and it wasn’t a surprise at all. Coach (Frank) Llanes’ teams never quit.”
Cal’s loss allowed second-place La Serna (9-8-1, 6-2) to pull within a game in the standings.
Cal (13-5, 7-1) will start senior right-hander Ruben Pinedo on the mound, according to Nieto. Senior Esteban Solis will likely start for El Rancho (6-12, 2-6).
First pitch is scheduled for 3:15 p.m.
