Second place still a possibility for Heralds

Whittier Christian’s boys volleyball team can still finish alone in second place in the Olympic League, but it must top rival Valley Christian next week on the road.
The Heralds fell to 4-2 in league play Thursday with their 3-1 loss to Heritage Christian. Heritage clinched the league’s No. 1 playoff seed by improving to 6-0 with two matches left.
Whittier Christian leads Valley Christian by one match in the standings, and the teams will meet in Valley’s gym Thursday. Whittier Christian pulled out a five-game victory when the teams met earlier this season. The Heralds will close the regular season May 6 at home against last-place Maranatha, whom they swept April 10.
“We hope to win those two, be 6-2 and set us up for a good (draw) in the playoffs,” coach Chris Duran said following Thursday’s match.

School records tumble for Cal at Mt. SAC Relays

A pair of Cal High track records fell at last week’s Mt. SAC Relays thanks to two blistering anchor legs.
Cal’s boys won the 4×1,600 relay in the Invitational, or elite, race on Saturday in a meet-record time of 17:23.66, bettering the previous school mark set last by over 4 seconds. Seniors Rudy Gonzalez (4:24) and Matlazomatli Rojas (4:23) and junior Sam Bautista (4:18) got the Condors off to a great start, and senior Jose Pacheco flew home in 4:14 to secure first place. It was the third-fastest time in the country this year.
“We were hoping to break the school record,” Cal coach Angelica De La Rosa said, “… and we wound up winning the meet and setting a meet record.”
With Rojas battling bronchitis, Cal finished fifth at the Arcadia Invitational a week before. But he’s now on the mend, and De La Rosa knows better times are on the way.
“The team still has a little bit of room to improve,” she said.
Cal’s girls 4×1,600 also set a school record in the seeded race, finishing in 21:46.67. Junior Stephanie Cortez got the Condors out quickly (5:15), with junior Ilse Cacho (5:40) and senior Yolanda Quezada (5:37) following. Senior Justice Navarro finished in 5:14, leading the team to sixth place. The previous record was 22:32.59.

Del Rio League baseball standings get a little tighter

The Del Rio League became a little bit more interesting Wednesday after first-place Cal suffered its first DRL loss of the season.
The Condors’ 2-0 loss to El Rancho, coupled with La Serna’s 8-5 victory over Santa Fe, cut Cal’s lead in the league to one game. The same teams will meet again Friday.
Cal fell to 7-1 while the Dons improved to 2-6. La Serna improved to 6-2 and Santa Fe fell to 4-4.
Also Wednesday, La Mirada topped Narbonne 6-0 to claim the championship of the St. Paul Easter Tournament.
