We hit the second week of the prep football season, and we have some championship-caliber games as La Mirada, fresh off a win over highly-regarded Tesoro, hosts traditional SGV power Charter Oak…La Habra, which opened with a loss to El Toro, visits the 626 to renew an old rivalry with South Hills. St. Paul also looks for its second consecutive win with a home date vs. Warren.

Thursday Football: Woes continue for Montebello; La Serna, Whittier bounce back

Northview High School football coach Marcel Perez spoke with a lot of optimisim about his team during the summer.
The Vikings continued to live up to his billing Thursday night.
Elijah Grijalva rushed for 71 yards and a touchdown and made two big plays on defense as Northview won its second game to start the season with a victory over Montebello in a nonleague game at San Dimas High School.
Quarterback Steven Comstock rushed for 94 yards and two touchdowns for the Vikings, who beat Rosemead last week.

Isaac Mendibles rushed for 119 yards and scored the only touchdown for Montebello, which slipped to 0-2. The Oilers were also routed by Diamond Bar last week.
Northview all but it away by halftime. The Vikings, getting 59 yards rushing and a touchdown from Andres Hooper, led 24-6 after two quarters.
La Serna 42, Los Osos 26
Enrique Pacheco is making Lancer fans forget about Frankie Palmer, throwing for nearly 300 yards and four scores as La Serna bounced back from last week’s opening loss.
La Serna also received 139 yards receiving and two TDS from Curtis Ashton.
Whitter 24, Azusa 7
Alex Soto threw for 285 yards and two TDs as the Cardinals bounced back from a blow-out loss.
Glenn 7, Pioneer 3
Martin Sanchez scored from the two on fourth down in the closing minutes as Glenn beat the Titans.

La Serna, Montebello ranked fifth in preseason water polo polls

Twelve San Gabriel Valley area teams earned spots in the preseason CIF-Southern Section water polo poll.
La Serna and Montebello both earned No. 5 spots.
Los Altos, which was the CIF-SS runner-ups last season, is No. 2 in Division 5. Claremont is the division’s top seed. La Serna is fifth and Walnut seventh.
Montebello is fifth in Division 3. La Canada is fourth, South Pasadena eighth and Temple City in others (12th).
Division 4: Flintridge Prep is ninth and in others is La Habra (11th), Pasadena (12th) and Pasadena Poly (14th).
Division 2: Damien is sixth.

Whittier Christian ranked second in preseason volleyball poll

Eleven San Gabriel Valley area teams are ranked in the CIF-Southern Section preseason volleyball poll, led by Whittier Christian.
The Heralds, who won a division title last year, are ranked second in Division 2AA. They defeated Mayfield, which earned a No. 3 spot. South Torrance is No. 1. Also ranked in the division is South Pasadena (seventh) and Pasadena Poly (10th).
There was no Division 3 poll.
In other divisions:
Division 4AA: St. Paul is fourth.
Division 1AA: Flintridge Saced Heart is in others (13th).
Division 2A: Arcadia seventh and Glendora eighth.
Division 4A: Duarte is second, Gladstone third and Azusa fourth.
Division 5AA: San Gabriel Academy is seventh.
