Whittier Christian’s Christie Wan gets break from USTA tennis

LA HABRA Christie Wan did not have to play high school tennis.
The Whittier Christian High School 15-year-old is among the top-ranked players in the nation for her age group. Heralds coach Nicole Nicolaides had to do a bit of arm-twisting.
“This year it was a a little harder and we had make compromises,” Nicolaides said. “She is upping her training, working on her ranking and doing more tournaments.”
The sophomore said she is more than happy to step away from the tournament trail a few days a week, even tough she began her high school season less than two weeks ago when the season began in early September.
“High school tennis is kind of fun,” she said. “It’s more of a team atmosphere instead of a single person in tournaments. Last year I had a lot of fun competing with the team and I wanted to see how I’d do again this year.”
