WHITTIER — La Serna High School was a surprise first-round loser in the CIF-Southern Section girls soccer playoffs last season.
The Lancers made sure not to repeat the offense.
Michelle Reed scored two goals and had two assists as No. 4 seed La Serna opened up the postseason with an 8-0 victory over visiting Lompoc in a Division 5 first-round game on Thursday.
Miranda Yzabal had a goal and assist for the Lancers, who improved to 16-4-5 and will face either Rowland or Linfield Christian in the second round on Tuesday. La Serna also got goals from Elizabeth Hernandez, Natasha Ortiz, Jillian Issacs, Colleen Tamashiro andaniela Paiz.
Ali Gonzalez had 15 saves for Lompoc, which finished 11-8-3. La Serna outshot the Braves, 37-2.

La Serna’s Michelle Reed: “As soon as we got that first goal, we wanted more. We remembered what it felt like last year and we didn’t want to go through that again. We couldn’t finish 1-0. We had to take it to them and finish with five or more.”

La Serna coach Tessa Troglia: “I think they (the La Serna players) knew that you play 80 minutes and that dictates the outcome. (Last year) was a lesson for us, so I think (Thursday) they stayed focused and played good soccer. They finished their chances. They played really well today.”

CANTWELL 84, SOUTHLANDS 12
MONTEBELLO —
An all out clinic was put on in a division 3A first round CIF-Southern Section girls basketball game Thursday night.
And the benefactor was the division number three seed Cantwell Sacred Heart Cardinals, an 84-12 winner over visiting Southlands Christian.
Cantwell (20-7), which advanced to the CIF semifinals last season, will be on the road in a second round game against California Academy of Math and Science (CAMS), a 52-48, winner over Milken.
The game was scheduled for this Saturday, but has been changed to Monday due to the unavailability of the home court of CAMS, which is at Cal State University Dominguez Hills. Game time is 7 p.m.
Twelve players scored for the Cardinals, with senior forward Monique Mesa leading the way with a game-high 12 points. Senior guard Stephanie Guerra had 11, senior guard Vanessa Espinosa added ten and sophomore forward Lily Perkins had nine.
“I wasn’t leading in scoring (Thursday), but I felt like it was better to assist my teammates when they were open,” Perkins said, who has averaged just about 15 points per game.
“We can’t let this game make us feel like we’re on top, because we know that the next game is going to be tougher.”
