Worst to first?
Whittier High School took another step toward achieving that goal on Friday.
Matt Sosa had three hits and a RBI and Nick Viramontes was solid on the mound as the Cardinals took over first in the Del Rio League baseball title chase with a 3-1 victory over host La Serna.
Viramontes allowed six hits and struck out five for Whittier, which improved to 12-5 overall and 4-1 in league play. The Cardinals, who tied for last last season, moved a game ahead of La Serna (13-7, 3-2) and California (15-3, 3-2), which lost 2-1 to Santa Fe.
Curtis Ashton had two hits and a RBI for La Serna.
Whittier coach Eric Ramirez was ejected in the sixth inning. By rule, he must sit out the Cardinals next game, which should be today when Whittier travels to Cantwell Sacred Heart of Mary for a nonleague doubleheader.
The Cardinals have a home-and-home against California next week.

Whittier’s Matt Sosa: “It means a lot. We had a terrible season last year and we’re trying to turn it around this year. We’re trying to get as many wins as we can, trying to take league.”

La Serna coach Anthony Gonzales Jr.: “Those guys compete. They took advantage of our mistakes. We lost because we had opportunities, had the right guys up and didn’t come through. We had been playing well for nine games, had a lot of timely hits and today we didn’t.”
