WHITTIER — Whittier High School is off to its best start in recent memory.
But it takes a lot to beat La Serna, which the Lancers again showed on Tuesday.
Dominique Mejia and Taylor Becerra each had three hits to lead La Serna to a 13-3 victory over the Cardinals in the team’s Del Rio League opener at Whittier High School. The game was halted after five innings due to the 10-run rule.
The duo also had three and two RBIs, respectively, for the Lancers, who improved to 13-4. Jelli Lopez also had two hits and two RBIs for La Serna, which is ranked No. 1 in the area and No. 43 nationally by MaxPreps.com. The Lancers are also No. 2 in CIF-Southern Section Division 3.
Amanda Canizales had two hits and two RBIs for Whittier, which slipped to 10-5.

La Serna’s Dominique Mejia: “It felt really good (to get the win). We felt really prepared. We were really excited and ready to play.”

Whittier’s Amanda Canizales: “We just have to bounce back from it. We have Santa Fe (on Thursday) and just have to eliminate our errors. We have to get the bats going. We stopped (hitting after the third). I stopped after that. We just have to bounce back.”
