LA MIRADA >>
Tuesday felt like Christmas in May for six La Mirada High School athletes.
The group signed national college letters in a ceremony at the school.
The list is led by softball player Monica Navarette, who signed with Division I Colorado State. The others are her teammates Erika Romero (University of Antelope Valley), Ariana Ramirez (Marymount California University, Los Angeles) and Valerie Alvarado (Indiana River State College, of Ft. Pierce, Fla.; swimmer Trent Sanchez (Whittier) and girls volleyball player Morghan Robinson (Shaw University, of Raleigh, N.C.).
Navarette is one the top players in the area. She ranks among the leaders in the area with a .344 batting average and has scored 15 runs in 22 games.
“I’m going to Colorado State because of it’s excellent D-I softball program,” Navarette said. “As well as it’s veterinary science program. I want to be a vet. It’s going to help me toward my goal, so I’m excited.”
Ramirez, who leads the Matadores with a .371 batting average, will help Marymount California begin it’s fray in collegiate softball.
“I chose (Marymount) because they have a great coach and academic program,” Ramirez said. “It’s going to be our first year having a softball program. That’s going to be really exciting.”
Alvarado is one of the top pitchers in the area. She is 8-6 this season with 101 strikeouts in 87 innings. Romero has scored 11 runs in 22 games. Both are expected to be solid additions to their respective colleges.

“I chose this school, because it’s going to help me reach where I want to go in the future,” Alvarado said. “I’m really excited.”
Said Romero: I’m going to Antelope Valley to continue my softball career and get a good education.”
Robinson was a solid led the Matadores with 152 kills this season.
“I decided on Shaw because its really good athletically and academically,” Robinson said.
Sanchez has earned All-Area the past two seasons.
Said Sanchez: “I decided to go to Whittier, bases on its academics and my place on the swim team.”
