COSTA MESA —
Daniel Alvarez has been like money in the bank for the California High School baseball team the past three seasons.
The Condors cashed another check Tuesday.
Alvarez turned away a bases-loaded chance in the sixth before getting host Calvary Chapel/Santa Ana in order in the seventh as California advanced to the CIF-Southern Section quarterfinals with a 2-1 victory in a Division 4 second-round game at Vanguard University.
The senior also had two hits for the top-seeded Condors, who improved to 25-5. They will face San Gorgonio in Friday’s quarterfinals. The site will be announced Wednesday.
Calvary Chapel finished 20-8.
The Eagles put a late scare into the Condors. They loaded the bases with two outs in the sixth before Alvarez was summoned to save the day.

Cal’s Daniel Alvarez: “I like when it’s on me. I live for that, for those moments. It feels unbelievable (to win). It felt good last season, getting to the semifinals. But we want to win it all. We came into today wanting to win it (for coach Tony Nieto). That’s what we did.”

Cal assistant coach Jeff Ramirez: “We have a great pitching staff. People don’t really know how deep we are. Johnston did a great job. Mikey (Elliott), our freshman, did a good job, and of course Alvarez. He’s our horse and we’re going to ride him as long as we can. He got the job done.”
SONORA 5, KATELLA 2
Gabe Armstrong and Dylan Villalobos had two hits each to lead the Raiders to a second-round win in Division 4.
Sonora improved to 20-8-1 and will host Serrano, a 5-2 winner over Victor Valley, in Friday’s quarterfinals.
