GAHR 4, SANTA FE 2
SANTA FE SPRINGS —A surprising run through the CIF-SS playoffs has come to an end for the Santa Fe High School softball team, which was third in the Del Rio League. But not without a valiant effort against the number four seed team in the division.
Visiting Gahr high came from behind, scoring four times in the fifth inning to defeat the Chiefs, 4-2 in a Division 3 second round game Tuesday afternoon.
Gahr (23-7), on the other hand, advances to the quarterfinals for the first time since the 2008 season. The Gladiators will host Laguna Hills, a 4-3 winner over Burroughs of Burbank, on Thursday.
Junior center fielder Alyssa Cuffia hit a 3-run home run to give Gahr a 4-2 lead in the fifth.
Santa Fe coach Randi Berg: “Every game we win is a bonus for us, but I think the girls put too much pressure on themselves. We had a great season, but it didn’t end the way we wanted it to.”

COSTA MESA —
Daniel Alvarez has been like money in the bank for the California High School baseball team the past three seasons.
The Condors cashed another check Tuesday.
Alvarez turned away a bases-loaded chance in the sixth before getting host Calvary Chapel/Santa Ana in order in the seventh as California advanced to the CIF-Southern Section quarterfinals with a 2-1 victory in a Division 4 second-round game at Vanguard University.
The senior also had two hits for the top-seeded Condors, who improved to 25-5. They will face San Gorgonio in Friday’s quarterfinals. The site will be announced Wednesday.
Calvary Chapel finished 20-8.
The Eagles put a late scare into the Condors. They loaded the bases with two outs in the sixth before Alvarez was summoned to save the day.

Cal’s Daniel Alvarez: “I like when it’s on me. I live for that, for those moments. It feels unbelievable (to win). It felt good last season, getting to the semifinals. But we want to win it all. We came into today wanting to win it (for coach Tony Nieto). That’s what we did.”

Cal assistant coach Jeff Ramirez: “We have a great pitching staff. People don’t really know how deep we are. Johnston did a great job. Mikey (Elliott), our freshman, did a good job, and of course Alvarez. He’s our horse and we’re going to ride him as long as we can. He got the job done.”
SONORA 5, KATELLA 2
Gabe Armstrong and Dylan Villalobos had two hits each to lead the Raiders to a second-round win in Division 4.
Sonora improved to 20-8-1 and will host Serrano, a 5-2 winner over Victor Valley, in Friday’s quarterfinals.

CIF-SS Softball Playoffs: La Serna wins big, four others survive

LA SERNA 19, CANTWELL 5
WHITTIER >> The La Serna High School softball team has a slogan this season which reads, ”unfinished business”.The players wear T-shirts every day at practice with that saying, which is a reminder of last season’s CIF-SS Division 3 title-game loss to St. Paul. The Lancers, ranked second in Division 3, began their ‘unfinished business’ Thursday with a first-round victory over visiting Cantwell Sacred Heart, 19-5, in a five-inning mercy rule game.“It (the big win) gets the girls pumped up and gets them going and their confidence built up,” second-year co-coach Mike Reed said.“They (Cantwell) came out and battled, but we just got some timely hits.”
