Whittier Christian defeats La Serna, 25-20, 25-21, 25-12
WHITTIER — The lights to the Sierra Education Center gymnasium shut off just a few minutes before Whittier Christian High School was about to make it a sweep of host La Serna.
Even though the gym lights came right back on, the Lancers’ lights went out much earlier in the match on Wednesday evening. After the Lancers played the Heralds to the brink in the first two games, Whittier Christian jumped on La Serna in the third game en route to a 25-20, 25-21, 25-12 victory.
The Heralds (15-2) jumped out to a 14-4 lead in the final game behind four Amanda Ashworth kills and two Molly Patapoff aces in a 10-2 run.
The Heralds were coming off a third-place finish in a north San Diego tournament.
Whittier Chrisitan coach Todd Morrison: “La Serna battled hard those first two sets and I thought we were able to fight and play defense. Eventually we found holes. They had it in the first set and we had to just stay with them to bring it back under control.”
La Serna coach Monique Gayton: “I thought the first two games were great. That third game showed our inconsistencies and our lack of confidence. We played really well in the first two games. I wish we had kept it up.”

La Serna’s Isabelle Von Lockner: “They had two big games and it got us stuck in our head and then it went away.”
