Whittier made a statement tonight. The Cardinals routed Schurr, 39-0. The question is now are they ready for La Serna? We’ll find out Thursday when the two square off at Pioneer High School to open Del Rio League play. But that’s next week. Let’s get to what happened tonight. Below you can find all the recaps.

WHITTIER 39, SCHURR 0
MONTEBELLO — On Friday night at Montebello High School, Whittier had the looks of a Del Rio League contender, routing Schurr 39-0.
The legitimacy of all Del Rio teams in recent years has been determined by how they stack up with stalwart La Serna. The Cardinals will get their shot at the Lancers on Thursday when the teams open up league play.
Whittier (3-2) wasted no time jumping on Schurr when Dylan Salcido connected with Robert Rios for a 21-yard touchdown on the game’s first possession, capping a seven-play, 70-yard drive.
The Cardinals forced a three-and-out after sacking the Spartans twice on the ensuing possession. The snap on Schurr’s punt attempt then went over the punter’s head and through the end zone for a safety, extending the Whittier lead to 9-0.
Things went from bad to worse for the Spartans when their kickoff following the safety went out of bounds, giving the Cardinals great field possession at the Schurr 45.
Five plays later, Salcido found Anthony Rios for a 30-yard touchdown for a 15-0 Whittier lead.

Friday night at Don Memorial Stadium.

Tevaka Tuioti took over in the third quarter at QB for the visitors and kept things going in the same direction. He completed 4 of 5 passes for 58 yards before being replaced in the fourth quarter.
The Pioneers (2-4, 1-1) struggled trying to run or throw and were hampered by turnovers. Artesia QB Todd Fahey went 4 for 9 through the air for 29 yards and one interception. Artesia had only one running play of at least 10 yards, and lost three fumbles.
