WHITTIER — There were a few area enthusiasts that felt the Whittier High School football team, after the Cardinals went 3-2 during nonleague play and averaged 40 points a game, might have a shot at knocking off perennial Del Rio League power La Serna.
But the Lancers have been on a different level in recent seasons, and they continued to show it Thursday.
Jon Ceballos threw for 244 yards and accounted for five touchdowns and La Serna continued its recent dominance of Whittier with a 35-0 victory in the league opener at Pioneer High School.
Anthony Garcia rushed for 107 yards and scored two touchdowns and Jonathan Wise had three receptions for 97 yards and a touchdown for the Lancers, who improved to 4-2.
Anthony Rios had 51 yards receiving for Whittier, which slipped to 3-3.
The Lancers outgained the Cardinals, 434-96.
La Serna’s Jon Ceballos: “We were told to not let the (pregame hype) not to come into play. But it did a little bit, to give us our emotion and fire us up. Obviously, you could tell, 42-0, we were fired up. This team is not going anywhere. We’re going to get better, everyday.”
