WHITTIER — La Serna High School has been the dominant boys water polo team in the Del Rio League, and Tuesday the Lancers took another step toward continuing its winning tradition.
George Mooney had seven goals and the host Lancers stayed atop the league standings with a 19-8 victory over Whittier in Del Rio League game.

La Serna, ranked No. 2 in this week in CIF-Southern Section Division 5 poll, had 13 players score to improve to 13-6 overall and 3-0 in league play. The win sets up a first-place showdown next Tuesday with rival California, which is also 3-0 in league after a 16-9 win at Santa Fe, also on Tuesday.
David Sarkissian had five goals for Whittier, which slipped to 12-7 and 2-1.
The key stretch for La Serna came in the back half of the second period, when it forced four turnovers in five possessions, converting all them to turn a 5-2 lead after the first quarter to a 10-3 advantage at halftime.
The Lancers went up 7-3 on consecutive fast-break shots by Ryan Ward and Evan Monterroso with four minutes left in the first half.
John Gomez followed with a goal from the hole for an 8-3 advantage before Stephen Casas and Brian Barthelmess converted back-to-back breakaways for a 10-3 lead.
La Serna’s George Mooney: “It boosts are mentality (to get a win like this). It shows we can play together, work on stuff we do in practice. It shows what were capable of.”
