WHITTIER — The Santa Fe High School boys basketball team came out with a vengeance to start Friday’s Del Rio League game against La Serna and never let up the rest of the way en route to a 68-45 victory Friday night.
With Whittier defeating Pioneer, 96-69, La Serna fell into second place at 3-1. Santa Fe evened its DRL record at 2-2 and jumped into third place with Pioneer (2-2) with one game remaining in the first half of league play.
The Chiefs (10-8 overall) had four players in double figures, with junior Matthew Corona leading the way with 19 points. He was followed by senior Jacob Huerta (18 points), senior Adrian Uribe (13) and junior Donny Risper (10).
La Serna (14-7 overall) was led by sophomore forward Cedric Sobers, with a game-high 27 points. He was the only player for the Lancers in double figures.
Santa Fe coach Leonard Romero: “What a great win for this team. From where we were one week ago to where we’re at now, I’m very proud of the guys in the way they responded. I’m only happy for them.”
Santa Fe’s Jacob Huerta: “We just came out aggressive on offense and focused on the game plan and attacked them (La Serna).”
La Serna’s Cedric Sobers: “They put a lot of pressure on us and double teamed all of us.”
