BISHOP MONTGOMERY 64, ST. PAUL 62

SANTA FE SPRINGS — St. Paul High School has never swept the season series from Bishop Montgomery in girls basketball. The Swordsmen were oh so close Thursday night.Kayla Padilla scored on a layup with three seconds left and the Knights scored a 64-62 win over host St. Paul in a Del Rey League game.
Jessica Malazarte scored 14 points and Padilla had 13 for Bishop Montgomery, which improved to 11-12 overall and 2-4 in league play. Valerie Godinez had 20 points and Adriana Gonzalez 15 for the Swordsmen, who slipped to 15-11 and 3-4.
St. Paul, which beat Bishop Montgomery (58-54) on Jan. 19, had a chance to tie or win it at the end. But Padilla was able to intercept a pass near the top of the key as time expired.
St. Paul coach Robert Miller: “It would have been the first time we’ve ever (swept Bishop Montgomery). We certainly had an opportunity. I feel bad for these kids, because I screwed up (with the defensive alignment on the winning basket). It was a great run to get us in position. I just made a mistake putting us in that situation.”
