MONTEBELLO >> For the Schurr High School baseball team, the next two weeks are all about taking care of business and staying within striking distance of rival and first-place Montebello.The Spartans did their part Friday.
Jonathan Sanchez and Andrew Alvarado had two hits each and Michael Caldera was steady on the mound as host Schurr kept pace with the Oilers with a 7-2 victory over Alhambra in an Almont League game.
Sanchez had two-run triple in the second inning and scored two runs for Schurr, which improved to 14-9 and 7-1. Gilbert Romero had two hits for the Moors, who slipped to 14-8-1 and 4-4.
It also was the Spartans fourth consecutive win over Alhambra dating back to last season. They swept the season series after previously beating the Moors 2-1 in March and 1-0 on Tuesday.
Schurr fought back from an early deficit to lead 4-2 after three innings before scoring three runs in the fifth to lead 7-2.
The Spartans, after falling behind 2-0 in the top of the first, tied it at 2 in their half of the inning on a two-out double by Tony Rosario, a walk an RBI single by Alvarado and a fielding error.
Schurr took a 4-2 lead in the third. Gabriel Obeso reached on an error and Rosario walked before Sanchez tripled to center field for the two-run advantage.
Sanchez hit fly ball for a three-base error to make it 6-2 in the fifth before Alvarado hit a sacrifice fly to make it 7-2.
Schurr coach Houston Hernandez: “We have a big three-game set with (Montebello the last week). But taking care of business before hand, is huge for us. But Alhambra is a quality program. This is a big feather in these kids’ cap to sweep them (this season). These kids … it doesn’t matter what’s happened in the past, they come to play.”
