CIF-SS Playoffs: CSHM advances; Whittier Christian loses; Cal gets a new second-round opponent

By Stephen Ramirez
MONTEBELLO >>
Cantwell-Sacred Heart of Mary High School did not receive a top-four seed for the CIF Southern Section baseball playoffs. But that didn’t stop the Cardinals from playing like one of the top teams in Division 5.
They had that look of an elite squad Friday.
Andrew “Cheese” Quillen gave up seven hits and struck out seven as host CSHM opened the postseason with a 4-1 victory over Ontario Christian.
Jared Thomas and Brandon Rodriguez also had two hits each for the Cardinals, who improved to 25-4. They will travel to Garey, which beat San Marino 4-2, for a second-round game on Tuesday. Ontario Christian, which beat El Monte, 11-9, in the wild-card round on Wednesday, finished 15-14.
“I don’t know how (CIF-SS) seeds those teams, but the fact we beat a couple of those teams that are seeded higher than us, that’s fine,” CSHM coach Larry Patino said. “We work so hard. I call it blinkers on and have my guys just focus on us. The other team has to come across the field and compete against us.
“That’s how we see it. We do have a chip on our shoulder. We play the game really hard, we work really hard and we have a lot of talent here.”
CSHM scored its four runs in the first inning after the first six batters reached safely. Thomas led off with a bunt single and scored on a triple to right-center field by Javy Espinoza. Elijah Vazquez was then hit by a pitch before Zachary Thomas and Quillen followed with consecutive RBI singles. Thomas scored the fourth run on a fielding error.
Quillen took care of the rest. Ontario Christian put its first two batters on, but Quillen then retired nine of the next 10. He threw six shutout innings before giving up a run in the seventh.
“It was huge (to get the early lead),” Quillen said. “A lot of nerves the night before, but I was glad I got it done.
“We came in thinking if we could score seven runs we could win, because no has scored seven runs against us all year. We got the job done.”
Ontario Christian broke up the shut out in the seventh on a leadoff double by Zachary Burroughs and a single by Joshua Mason. Quillen closed the door after inducing a fly out and ground out.
“We came out hyped, hitting the ball all over the field,” Patino said. “(Ontario Christian) came back and battled back and we ended up winning 4-1.
“It was a big hurdle for us to get this win, so hopefully we can keep it rolling.”
Cal gets new second-round opponent
California went to bed Thursday thinking it would travel to Torrance for a second-round Division 4 playoff game next week.
That changed Friday. Fullerton, which lost to Torrance, is now the Condors opponent after Torrance had to forfeit the win for conducting pre-game batting practice, which is a rules violation.
Cal will travel to Fullerton next Tuesday at 3:15 p.m.
